Lost Fingernail - Toddler
"Craig Tuggle" wrote in message ... My son is 2 and at daycare there was an accident and part of his fingernail came clear off. The bottom half of the nail (from where it grows to half-way up). The top of the fingernail stayed on - I guess attached at the sides. Very weird - I have never seen anyone lose just the bottom half before. Anyway - it has been 3 weeks and I don't see any re-growth and was wondering if this warrants a look from the dr. It doesn't look infected at all - in fact it seems to have healed rather quickly and nicely consider the trauma to it. Just curious if anyone had similar experiences. Of course you should check with the doc if you are concerned. With that said, I lost a finger nail due to a trauma of some sort when I was about 7. It took *forever* [to a seven year old] to grow back in. I don't recall exactly how long that was, but it made a major impression on me forty years ago well enough that I still remember it *very* clearly but do not recall what the trauma was that caused me to loose it in the first place! -Aula |

I guess that is what I was looking for - if people thought 3 weeks was enough time for a nail to start growing in or not. Since it doesn't look infected (it actually looks pretty good considering) I don't know that it warrants a dr. visit. What could she do, I wonder, anyway? Sara My son had his big toenail (ouch) torn off completely at that age. I don't remember when I saw new growth, but it took close to a year before it was grwon back. Rememeber there is a lot of growth going on in the nail bed you can't see. |

Thanks Sara Mom to Ethan (12/00) My son lost his complete fingernail when he was three. We took him to the ER because we thought he had also broken his finger. Thankfully, he hadn't. In the ER, they told us it could take up to two months for the fingernail to grow back in, however, we started seeing a little growth after three weeks. They also said there was a chance that it could grow back deformed or not at all, but kids heal better than adults, and usually they have more success at their nails growing back normally. I think having the top part of the nail will actually help. When my son lost his nail, they temporarily stitched it back into place to provide a tract for the new one. The top part should provide the same function for your son. Good luck, Sher |
