The more I look at it, the more I think that the asterisk is the bat's body,
and the carats are it's wings. (I can't imagine any self-respecting baqt
holding still for a bow to be put between it's ears. chuckle)

Yeah, you got the gist of it. And you may remember an old Bugs Bunny
cartoon where a vampire chases him around, sometimes as a bat who does
in fact appear to be wearing a bowtie.

My GF thought it was a kissy-face until I let her in on the info. While
wrong, it looks more likely than the cat theory, at least if you are
Japanese. Hey, it's quick ASCII art and I type every one by hand.
