Researchers at the Univerity of Liverpool studied the effects of food colouring brilliant blue (E133) combined with monosodium glutamate (MSG; E621) and colouring quinoline yellow (E951) combined with the sweetener aspartame (E951). According to the report, published in the journal Toxicological Sciences, when these additives were combined in levels similar to those consumed in a typical children's snack and drink, they stunted the growth of nerve cells in mice, interfering with proper signalling functions. The researchers revealed that the combination of brilliant blue and MSG could inhibit cell growth up to four times more than the additives on their own, while for quinoline yellow and aspartame the figure rises to seven. In response to the study, UK regulatory body Food Standards Agency (FSA) said "all of the additives included in the study are permitted for use in food under current EU legislation following a rigorous safety assessment. The safety of all additives is kept under review." However, the researchers note that "even though the use of single food additives at their regulated concentrations is believed to be relatively safe, their combined effects are unclear and until now have not been widely studied." The three-year study was funded by Organix Brands, manufacturers of a range of organic foods for children. "Many parents of sensitive children know that food additives are a problem. And in processed foods like sweets and snacks they are typically present in combinations," said Dr Lizzie Vann, founder of Organix Brands. "Many parenting and campaigning groups have been calling for stricter regulation and more caution to be taken with additives. At last, the scientific support for their suspicions is beginning to appear," she added. Indeed, in its statement the FSA also pointed out that it is funding research "to investigate possible effects of mixtures of chemicals, including food additives. The latest Agency call for research specifically requests proposals for research investigating the effects of exposure to multiple chemicals occurring in food." "The Agency is also funding research on the effects of two groups of colour additives on the behaviour of 3-year old and 8-9-year old children. This is expected to report in spring 2007," it added. The food colouring brilliant blue, which is currently banned in the majority of EU countries, is used in the UK in sweets, confectionery, dessert and edible ices, as well as in some soft drinks, baked goods and tinned processed peas. Quinoline yellow is banned in foods in Australia, the US and Norway, but its applications in the UK include sweets, smoked haddock, confectionery and pickles. MSG is banned in baby food in the UK, but is used in a variety of crisps and snacks, which, according to research cited by Organix, are consumed at least once a week by 60 per cent of under five year-olds. The controversial sweetener aspartame is currently used in more than 6,000 food and drink products in the EU and as a table-top sweetener. But health concerns linked to the product have surrounded it with a stream of negative publicity. According to Organix, "more needs to be done to understand the effects of additives, and in particular the effects of additives when mixed together." Their key body systems -- cardiovascular, immune, nervous and reproductive -- are in a state of fast development for most of their early childhood. During this dynamic time it is essential that the environment in which they grow is free of toxins, and the foods they are fed are pure and offer quality nutrition. Here are some key characteristics that show how different children are from adults: The average birth weight for a full term infant is 7 lbs 4 oz or 3.3 kilograms. Probably as a result of loss of excess fluid, weight drops up to 10% in the first week of life; birth weight should be regained by two weeks of age. Breast fed infants tend to regain birth weight a little later than bottle fed infants. On average, infants gain about 1 kilogram per month for the first 3 months, ½ kilogram per month from 3-6 months of age, 1/3 kilogram per month from 6-9 months of age and ¼ kilogram per month from 9-12 months of age. Full term infants double their birth weight by 4 months of age and triple it by 12 months of age. A baby will grow rapidly in its first year and achieve major developmental milestones, such as taking first steps or maybe even saying a few first words. On average, babies grow 10 inches (25 centimetres) in height while tripling birth weight by their first birthday. However, after age 1, a baby's growth in length slows considerably, and by 2 years, growth in height usually continues at a fairly steady rate of approximately 2 1/2 inches (6 centimetres) per year until adolescence. Food Quality Infants and toddlers need optimum nutrition. Food that has been over-processed, watered down or had 'improvers' added does not provide optimum nutrition. Contrary to accepted opinion, babies are very sensitive to taste. Their senses of smell and taste are developing throughout the first twelve months of their lives. Research shows that weaning-foods affect food preferences later in life, so bland, starchy, sugary foods for instance, may affect food choices later. Maltodextrins present in many commercial brands of baby food and are permitted in formula milks, are formed from partially broken-down carbohydrates. They are used extensively in food processing because they provide bulk, and enhance the flavour of other, often cheaper ingredients. They have no nutritional function, and their presence helps familiarise infant taste buds with poor quality synthetic foods. It is often difficult to find out exactly what is in non-organic babyfoods. Over 70% of four hundred baby foods tested by the Food Commission were found to have been bulked out with low-nutrient starches, such as modified starch and maltodextrin. To check what you are buying you'll need to read the label carefully and look for unnecessary starches and maltodextrin. Look out for phrases such as carefully developed... specially formulated... provide a balanced, highly nutritious diet... properly balanced... as these are often meaningless and misleading. Watch out for pictures and titles on packets, as they are not always what they seem! For example, the Food Commission examined a recipe called cheese, spinach and potato bake, which although it had cheese first in the title, it was actually eleventh in the ingredients list. We believe that parents must have access to more information about children's diets. Manufacturers should list the "eight key nutrients" that are covered by the Food Labelling Act, are shown on the packaging of all foods targeted at children. All manufacturers should comply with this. Pesticides Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of all chemical toxins, including pesticides. They risk eating up to five times more residues than adults, because they eat a greater amount of food compared to their body weight. In addition, a baby's diet mainly comprises of fruit juices, fruit, vegetables and milk -- precisely those foods where residues are detected most. This is at a time when he or she is least able to deal with them. Adults eat more processed foods that are less likely to contain residues. The immune system of infants is not fully developed and is particularly sensitive to toxins. Many pesticides can mimic and interfere with sex hormones, and so exposure to even minute residues during their key developing period can have effects on the immune and reproductive systems in later life. Toxicologists and child specialists have stated that because of increased exposure to pesticides and other toxic substances, children are more likely to suffer from neurotoxic effects, endocrinal problems and impaired immune-system functions. Pesticide exposure could also potentially cause cancers to develop later in life. When chemicals are mixed it seems the effect may be greater than the sum of the parts. This could have profound implications, especially for babies. It has been discovered that some combinations of chemicals are much more powerful than the chemicals individually. Combinations of two or three common pesticides, that may be found at low levels in the environment, are anywhere from 160 - 1600 times as powerful as any of the individual pesticides alone. Many foods that we eat contain multiple pesticide residues. Most research, however, is done on single pesticides, and combinations are not usually studied because interactive effects are not easy to discern. It is important to protect all children from these risks. Many health professionals believe that one of the best ways to do this is to provide them with an organic diet wherever possible. People buy organic food for many reasons, including: nutritionally healthier, fewer pesticide residues, taste of the food, and the belief that organic food has a higher nutritional value. Organic farmers also have a greater concern for the environment and for animal welfare. It is natural food that most people feel they can trust. Scientific studies have proved that organic produce has a higher dry-matter content -- which means it has a greater amount of essential minerals, a better flavour and has far lower levels of pesticide residues than non-organic foods. Studies by the Soil Association show that over 450 active pesticides are licensed for use in the UK. Organic farm only allows seven and this is only in extreme circumstances, and some are derived from natural substances. Guidelines for food additives and ingredients in the organic industry are also strict, with on 30 additives being permitted. Conventional foods permit 500 food additive and ingredients. DEFRA data showed that between 1940 and 2001, trace, minerals in the UK's fruit & veg fell by up to 76%, suggesting that intensive farming is to blame. Evidence shows that primary nutrients (those which are most important for our health) are much higher in organic food. The soil has more natural minerals and therefore this is transferred to the plant. Over the last 10 years, 2 out of every 3 parents have chosen to give their child some organic food during the weaning period -- either home-made, or ready prepared. In some supermarkets, organic babyfood is the only type of babyfood on sale. Organic baby food offers parents the peace of mind that they are giving their babies not only a food that is certified to have been produced without pesticides, but that also offers the best nutritional start in life. Organic foods are the purest foods available, certified free from: processing aids, emulsifiers, processed thickeners and added starches. The organic authorities such as the Soil Association have decided that the above ingredients have no health benefits to a child, and dilute the nutritional values of the food. They are banned in organic babyfoods. All organic baby foods contain 95% or 100% certified organic ingredients.
