Default best way to counter heartburn?

I'm just now starting to experience wicked heartburn. I have it from the
time I wake up until I go to bed. I'm pretty careful about what I eat, so
it's not dietary. I have tried Rolaids softchews, the active ingredient is
calcium. They taste really good, but I don't think they help! What else
can I take? Is a liquid based treatment (like Maalox) more effective than
tablets?

For a natural treatment, try papaya enzyme tablets. They are chewable
and remind me of Vitamin C tablets. They cured my pregnancy heartburn.

Thanks. Are these sold in health food stores, or in grocery stores?

I took OTC zantac (Walzan,actually--Walgreens brand which is way
cheaper). It was amazing how well it worked.

Plain old Tums and eating more frequent, smaller meals worked for me.
You might also try drinking less at meals. It gave me the sensation
that my food was floating, and it seemed to cause more heartburn. I
know that makes no sense at all, since the stomach contains fluid, but
not all pregnancy things make sense.

For me, heartburn tells me I'm having a blood sugar problem. But yes,
it is much, much worse during pregnancy. The best thing for it, I find,
is to eat something. It doesn't have to be much; just a mouthful of
something. Or a small meal, if you feel like it. Just make sure that
whatever the "something" is, is basically fat/protein. Anything carby
will make (my) heartburn worse.

I can relate to "wicked" heartburn. Mine gets so bad it wakes me up in
the middle of the night and I have to vomit to be rid of it. My doctor
gave me a prescription for Zantac, which has helped consideraby...also I
keep a bottle of wild berry malox in the fridge and take a drink when
the Zantac isn't enough. She said to use tums only when I didn't have
access to anything else. It doesn't matter what I eat or don't eat,
heartburn is just something I've had to endure as well. How far along
are you?

Hugs Betsy! I know how agonizing heartburn can be.

For prevention:

- eat samll, frequent meals, keeping the stomach from being too full.
- avoid rich, greasy, or highly spiced foods
- avoid drinking with meals. avoid coffee

For relief:

drink chamomile, fennel or peppermint tea after each meal.

acidophilus supplements may be helpful.

use slippery elm throat lozaenzes to ease severe heartburn

Good luck and let me know if any of this works for you!

Carl
