Default Activities for Auditory Skills

Be an active listener yourself. Pay attention
when your child speaks. Look him in the eye.

Simplify your language. Speak slowly, shorten
your comments, abbreviate your instructions,
repeat what you said.. Reinforce verbal instructions
with facial expressions, hand movements and
body language

Take the time to allow your child to respond to
your words and express his thoughts. Don't
rush him, don't interrupt and don't presure her
to speak

Reward his comments with nonverbal gestures
such as smiles and hugs and with verbal
encouragement, like *that's a great idea, let's
try it.*

If you only catch one word, encourage him to
tell you more.., *Tell me more about the truck*
If you don't catch any words, try encouraging him
to say more with your gestures.

Talk to your child while she eats, bathes, dresses,
etc. Teach her nouns (sunglasses, casserole),
body parts (thumb, buttocks), prepositions (around,
through), adjectives (juicy, soapy), time (yesterday,
later), categories (vegetables/ fruits, play clothes/
dressy clothes), verbs (zip/scrub), emotions (happy,
sorry)

Share your own thoughts. Model good speech and
communication skills.

Use rhythm and beat to improve your child's memory.
Give directions using *piggyback* songs. Almost
anything fits to twinkle twinkle little star or mary had
a little lamb. *Now it's time to wash your face, brush
your teeth, comb your hair, now it's time to put on
your clothes, so start with your underwear.*

Tell add a line stories where you begin with a line and
take turns to complete the story

Play fill in the rhyme.. A little bird lives in a tree,
a little fish lives in the _______

Encourage your child to pantomime while listening
to stories and poems or to music without words.
Use finger plays like the itsy bitsy spider.

Read to your child. Discuss the pictures in the books.
