Default choosing disposable diapers - which brand?

Pampers swaddlers worked best for us...had leaks with Huggies and Costco.

Price is not a huge issue, more concerned about blowouts and proper fit.
However, if there is a more economical brand that works well, I'm all ears!
There's Pampers Swaddlers, and Huggies Supreme, and Huggies with Gigglastic
waistband???

I want to get a "stockpile" of stuff, so I don't have to venture out for
awhile if I don't feel like it. I was thinking Costco, since I have to go
there this weekend anyways. Is the Costco brand diaper good?

How long does a newborn typically stay in newborn diapers? I guess they are
for up to 11 lbs, so I understand it depends on how big they are when born
and how fast they grow. But I'm just concerned that if I buy a big box of
newborn size, she'll grow out of them before I use them all up.

Oh, and for price comparison... on amazon.com, I can get 192 Huggies, size
1 w/gigglastic waistband (I can't believe they call them that) for $29.99
and free shipping. Is this a good price?

We prefer Pampers Swaddlers (now Cruisers) or Huggies Supreme. Nice and
stretchy, not heavily perfumed. For a NB the Swaddlers over the
Huggies, they seemed much softer. I just recently bought a package of
Pampers Baby Dry 'cause they were on sale and don't like them at all --
hardly any stretch.

That may or may not work, I'd get a few packages of NB Swaddlers and
wait to see how the baby is sized and shaped. Everyone I know has ended
up with leftover diapers and that is without stockpiling.

Exactly. My daughter seems to max out on her diapers a few pounds below
what the package says. Since she was 8.5 lbs at birth that didn't leave
long for the NB diapers. That said I liked having some NB diapers for a
nice fit, the 1s would have been too big. Also you go through a lot of
diapers in the early stages (I think we went through 10-12 per day
until she was a few months old) so a couple hundred diapers is about a
three week supply, not too likely you'll have many leftovers if you get
them in a size 1.

Do not stockpile. You have no idea how
diapers fit, how long he will be in each
size, etc. We went through many, many
brands (and types *within* each brand)
to get the correct fit. The cheaper
brands may be thinner, so you may use
more of them. The name brands are more
expensive, but you still don't know how
your child will fit into them.

I would suggest you start out with one
bag of one brand and see how that works.
Send DH out to get them, when you need
to restock.

Dominion is Loblaws/save easy/no frills for mainland Canada and the States
(guess where I work, ha ha). Those Teddy's choice are pretty good, they are
the only store brand I ever bought, the sale was too good to pass up and
they were good. Not quite as good as the swaddlers, but definately good
diapers for my little Stinker. Unfortunately, the big Stinker I live with
didn't like them as much and wanted Pampers back. (Now if only he used them
as much as I :-))

Different brands of diapers fit different kids differently. Skinny kids do
well in one type, and rolly polly kids to better in another type. Some
mom's hate the smell of pampers, but love the smell of Huggies. Etc.

We used Huggies Ultra Thins for both our girls, and they worked really well.
I think they tended to stay in newborn diapers until they were about 10
pounds, then we switched to size 1's. A friend gave me the best advice,
which I pass on to you -- don't be afraid to switch up to the next size
early. For example, if the Size 1 says "From 12-16 pounds" go ahead and
switch to it when the newborn size seems a little snug, around 10lbs. It
would technically still work for 2 more pounds, but the larger Size 1 will
fit just fine and hold extra pee, and actually have LESS leaks than the
newborn size, rather than more.

I'd buy a few packs of newborn diapers in different brands. That should be
enough to allow you to stay in the house and not have to leave for a while
after the birth, but give you a few different diapers to try out. Then you
can send dh out to pick up larger quantities of the ones you like. Or you
can use it as an excuse for you to get out of the house for an hour! I know
it's tempting to just pick a brand and purchase 1000 now, but you might end
up with a baby that doesn't fit into the brand you chose, then you'd be left
with tons of these diapers that leak!

Oh yeah, we get all our Huggies at Costco -- definitely cheaper and bigger
box than available at the supermarket or Walmart.

I'm *very* cheap about disposables. The WalMart store brand is pretty good
(Parents Choice?). I detest the smell of Luvs--they make her pee smellier
than it has to be.

I only do disposables when we are *very* busy (like, the past 6 weeks) and I
don't have time to do the cloth laundry, normally, or when she goes through
a phase where the velcros rub on the cloth covers.

Sorry, but there's no best diaper for every baby.
It depends on the shape of your baby, so it's best *not*
to stockpile until you know what works best for your baby.

Could well be. There's no such thing (in my opinion)
as a "typical" newborn. The range of normal is all over the
map. My babes were out of newborn diapers before you could
say boo. No way would a big box of newborn diapers have
been useful for us. I know other folks who used them
for quite a while.

DD1 went through diaper sizes so fast that when I look at the covers I have
left from her, almost *all* of them are size large or extra large. I think I
used vinyl pants on her for the earlier sizes--and she only spend about 3
months in anything smaller than a Large.

Shiny, OTOH... spent 3 months in size 1 and 4 months in size 2 and I just
*today* at exactly 7 months old bought our first pack of size three, but
we'll still be able to use up her size 2's. She has been in smalls and
mediums in cloth for 3-4 months already and while I anticipate her
outgrowing the smalls in the next couple weeks, she should be in mediums
for, oh, the rest of the year.

So you can't even predict from kid to kid, IME, based on what the last kid
did. DD1 at 2 months old was already heavier than Shiny is now.

Huggies. Store brands give my kid a rash; Luvs smell weird.

Luvs smell *nasty* imo... perfumy garbage makes the pees smell like toddler
poo, even for a breastfed younger baby! Ick.

Store brand has been much less unpleasant, though her pees smell the least
bad in cloth, oddly enough.
