Court Frees Deadbeat Parents

Changes in how child support laws are enforced is helping to get dozens of
deadbeat parents out of jail early.

Attorneys say a ruling by the State Superior Court makes it clear that
parents can no longer be sent to jail simply for non-support.

Judges will now have to first determine that someone does have the present
ability to pay and refuses before making a judgement.

Over the last few weeks dozens of support violators have seen early release
from the Erie County Prison.
Parents fighting the support battle say with violators behind bars they are
guaranteed some money with a work release program.

Now they fear getting back owed support will be that much harder.

Gee, you mean someone's going to make them follow the law? That's a novelty.
Do you have the case name?

Unfortunately, all that was all that was listed on their site.. which wasn't
much. If I should find more on it, you know I'll be posting it!

You know, what's most amusing here is that this article (while trying
its best to cast doubts about the wisdom of this new law) basically
comes out and admits that "dozens" of people were being held in jail for
not paying money that they just didn't have in the first place.

Why, before this bothersomely "Constitutional" new law, those deadbroke
dads could have been put to work as serfs for the state in their "work
release programs"!

Welcome to Amerika, indeed!
