Did school start yet? I was just wondering how first grade went for

Julian.

Last Monday, actually. And so far, so good, I guess. I am a *little*
concerned that the teacher he drew may not be such a great fit for him--she
has very businesslike and rather reserved personality, and I think Julian
would have done better with a teacher who was a bit warmer and more
demonstrative. Said teacher also has a reputation for being rather quick to
discipline and for instituting punishments rather harsher than called for by
the crime. Still, she also has a reputation for being fairly advanced
academically, and I believe that some of Julian's problems in kindy were
related to being bored by the curriculum, so perhaps a tougher teacher will
get better results from him. Can't say I'm thrilled about the homework yet,
though--just looks like more of the same photocopied worksheets requiring
the child to regurgitate the same stuff they've been doing over and over
again in the classroom.

In any event, there's not much we could do if it didn't work out. Every one
of the first grade classes is full, so he can't be moved to another class
without disrupting another child. We'd have to have some pretty catastrophic
issues for the school to be willing to do that.

My girls started last week and while there are a few things that are stuck
in my craw, I want to see if it works itself out. The first week of school
can be disorganized, so we shall see if things get better. I can't

complain
though too much, so far our teachers this year are pretty good. I do worry

a
bit with the first grade teacher, but like I said, we shall see.

Hope it all works out! Our first week of school was a bit disorganized,
primarily because the school wound up over-enrolled at the last minute.
First grade wasn't affected, but they're still sorting out the 2nd and 3rd
grades and trying to figure out whether they can get away without hiring
another teacher (they already hired one more than they started with).

Thanks for asking about Julian and good luck!

Well hopefully it the fit will change once they get to know each other. Good
luck.

We haven't had too much homework yet. Just get to know you kind of stuff. My
fifth grader has had some math, but not much. Yeah.

I don't know how yours will turn out Sue, but so far for us
5th grade has been *much* better homework-load wise than
4th. Of course this is the lull year before the nightmare
of sixth grade.
