Default eating in hospital during labor

I just found out that the hospital i am planning to deliver in does not
allow women to eat during labor- except ice chips -lol, ice is water not
food!! Is this common? For those of you who have BTDT, did you even
want to eat anything during labor? I could not imagine going more than
a few hours without eating!!!

I took in jellysnakes and a sportsbottle with cordial. Didn't matter.
I couldn't stop vomiting, in the end I had to have an anti-vomit
medicine put into my drip ( rehydrating me due to so much vomiting )

My midwife kept pushing red raspberry leaf tea with honey and salt, grape
juice, and gatorate, trying to get me to hydrate. I could NOT drink or eat
anything because I would promptly throw up. Well, I did drink water, but
she didn't feel that was enough. At one point, one sip of grape juice had
me emptying all the water I had managed to get down, so I refused after
awhile. I had all kinds of foods and drinks ready to eat during labor, but
once I was in labor my body was determined to have my stomach empty. No
fun, is it?!

I didn't eat for 42hrs as I didn't want anything after birth either,
just sleep.

I had eaten a sandwich at 7 pm, lost it at 1 am after trying some toast, so
I didn't eat till noon after I had my son. The midwife really encouraged me
to eat even though I really didn't feel like it after I had him. I just
wanted to sleep!

My hospital didn't allow it either even though I wanted that in my birth
plan. But trust me, food was the LAST thing on my mind during labor! I went
in at 5:30 am and labored until almost 10 at night. I had an episode early
on where my blood pressure shot way down really fast, and I vomited up the
drink I had been sipping. From that point on I was afraid to even
drink/sip!!

I hope your labor will be short so you'll be ok without eating. But you
might find that you won't even want anything anyway-- really, you'll
probably be more thirsty than anything, and you can eat after you have the
baby etc etc.

It sounds like my hospital was highly unusual - not only did they
encourage eating & drinking, they even had a kitchenette with snacks!
They did have to grab a teabag from somewhere else, tho. I think I
had a granola bar and an apple, IIRC. Dh complained about the lack of
selection - I'll have to tell him he was lucky to get anything! ;-)

Anyhow, I second (42nd?) the advice to pack stuff in. If you don't
want it, your dh very well may!

Lucky for me, I gave birth just after midnight, so it wasn't really
'mealtime' anyway. I can't believe I was offered a coffee ( dehydrating
). I guess they were just trying to find something that might appeal
and make me feel better
