Default Weight Q again.

I am not an expert, but ...

Is she growing taller? If she's growing up at the same time as she's
learning all these new activities (cruising, crawling etc) that it's no
wonder that she's not putting on any or maybe losing a little - she's
burning it off! Just keep up the food, and eventually she'll round out.

If she is not growing taller, and is losing weight, then the doctors should
look for a medical reason for this, not just food intake.*

The key things to look at are always: is she reaching her milestones, and
does she look healthy? Some kids are just skinny, and that's okay (I have
one of them).

*Friend of mine has a son who was smaller than his twin, consistently. He
seemed okay, ate well, except that he stayed small. Was tested for a
condition known as "renal acidosis" which is fairly rare. He was
borderline, but they put him on the medication anyway, since the side
effects are minimal. He immediately had a HUGE growth spurt, and outgrew
all of his baby shoes overnight. So much for just upping the calorie
intake!

Ok, NOW I'm scared. We went back to the doctor yesterday for the
weight check because they thought that she was not growing properly,
and now she has LOST weight. She's 9 mos old and only 13lbs 4.2oz. My
Aunt's 2 month old baby is the same size as she is. Other than her
size, She is completely healthy and normal. She is crawling, She sits
up (if you help her, She doesn't get the idea to sit up on her own but
once you sit her up she will stay sitting up) She's been pulling up on
things and trying to cruise and walk for about a month and a half now.
She eats like there is no tomorrow and yet she gains nothing. This
makes no sense to me. She eats baby food fruit, Rice cereal with
fruit, baby oatmeal with fruit, Zwieback toast, teether cookies,
bananas, noodles, and I've just started her on other table foods last
night because she does not like baby food veggies and meats. She still
nurses, and I nurse her anytime she wants it basically. Although I am
pretty small (5'2" and 135lbs) and in my husband's family most of the
females are small, the doctors said that she should still not be
slowing down her growth this early, and CERTAINLY not losing weight.
What am I doing wrong?

Scared,
Bessie

Default Weight Q again.

How much weight did she lose? My first son was born a nice size, almost 9
pounds. He was in the 50th percentile for the first 6 months and dropped
down to the 5th. He was only 17 pounds at a year. I had him for tests but he
turned up ok. He is still little for his age. The smallest in the family.
Everyone always tells me to feed him better. It's annoying. He does have
allergies real bad and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. For
years I always worried about his small size. The dr.'s say he is fine, just
little. Question the Dr. and watch her. She might just be little.

You are not doing anything wrong, as far as I can tell.
From what you describe, sounds like she could have a thyroid
that is overactive, which would lead to weight loss, even
though she eats a lot. This is easily checked with a blood
test, and treatment is straight forward. Although I have
never heard from hyperthyroidism in young children, I'm
sure it can exist. I'd check with a ped, in your case.
