Do Parents Understand Child Behavior?

Few adults who maltreat children are sadistic torturers. Instead, most
abusers expect too much from children and discipline them too harshly,
too often, and too bizarrely. They don't know enough about child
development to match their expectations to the child's capabilities
or nurture the child's emotional needs. A nationwide study -
"What Grown-Ups Understand About Child Development: A National
Benchmark Survey" - confirmed that misunderstanding is widespread.
For example, researchers found:

* Forty-four percent of parents and 60% of grandparents incorrectly
believe that picking up 3-month-olds every time they cry will spoil
them.
* Forty percent of the parents of young children believe that
1-year-olds who repeatedly turn the TV on and off while their parents
are trying to view it believe the children are "angry and trying to
get back at them."
* Twenty-six percent of all adults believe 3-year-olds should be
able to sit quietly for an hour at a time.

-- Comforting a child teaches them they deserve nurturing and concern
from the parent. And they transfer that to self care in their future.

-- One year olds, as an early childhood development specialist finally
got through my head, are practical physicists. They are doing what
nature forces them to do: test the physical world. Those that are
denied this in a safe world created by the caregiver grow up with two
problems; ignorance, and stupidity.

Imagine how magic it seems to the child when they see an adult turn the
TV on and off...and why would they not want to try and learn this for
themselves? And is it not very common for small children to use
repetition to learn...and not forget? If this were not so we would not
have nursery rhymes.

-- A 3 year old that can sit quietly for an hour at a time is sick.

In fact, adults rarely can perform this unreasonable feat of torture.
Consider yourself.

What do people do to their children when the child fails to live up to
these erroneous expectations?

In the answer lies the reason I claim that child abuse is hidden far
more than it is revealed.
