Great idea! By the way, I was told to get the cloth diapers, too. They
make great spit up towels and you can use them to clean later on.

My "source" told me that one, too, and it confused me. I couldn't figure out
why I'd need cloth diapers if I used the Pampers she rec'd, she had to
explain that one to me. Lol! I notice that a lot of moms give the same
advice so that clues me in.

Same source that rec'd Pampers Baby Dry diapers, and since someone here
mentioned they smell strong, I am going to look our for that. That's why I
ask around-- what bothers one may not bother another so they wouldn't think
to mention things like scent etc.

Nah. We've got through six months without one - they're not recommended
in this country and are quite hard to find. You can live without one
quite easily, even during a nasty cold.

Oh, I'm a bit happy to read this. ;-)

I honestly had never seen one before until about a year ago. I wonder
if they are starting to pick up in popularity, at least in my area, or
something.

I'll probably just hold off on one of those and see what happens.
Hopefully, the kid won't inherit my nose's tendency to run constantly
(man has this been a real problem ever since pg hormones started flowing).

I made it through 2 kids just *having* the snot sucker. I've only used it
on DD3, she's a snotty kid. Even then the first time I used it, I told DH I
was afraid I was gonna suck her brains out or something. It works a lot
better than kleenex on a newborn though.

I am trying to get a list together of items I want to have on hand as
starters and items that are well-liked to try. I know it;s different for

all
but I do hear a lot of the same opinions about good products etc. The same
brands keep coming up in praise etc....I would like any suggestion or

rec's.
I am going to ask about formla so those who is can tell me what works well
for their baby so I will know, I hope to end up breastfeeding though....I
know I won't use cloth diapers I will need disposables...

1. Best Baby wash?

We use J&J softwash, started out with plain old yellow J&J baby wash

2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs)

Huggies unscented at first. I still use them most of the time but I have
Pampers one ups for stinky poops (scented)

3. best disposable diapers?

We're Pampers people here...custom cruisers all the way, although they
recently changed the design

4. Good formula brand and type?

Oh please please please try and breastfeed. Sometimes the hospitals are not
that supportive and your OB's office will give you formula samples, but
breastfeeding is just SO much better for you AND your baby. Take a course
at the local hospital if need be, contact a lactation consultant.

5. Best diaper rash cream?

A&D at first, very gentle and if there is a rash, Balmex. There's something
called Triple Paste that they have in many pharmacies here that works
wonders for stubborn painful rashes.

6. Best bottles, brand and type?

We used Avent when we used them, which was rare...then when Laszlo weaned we
stuck with plain old Gerber bottles.

7. Best baby lotion?

Eucerin, it's not just for babies but it's extremely gentle. Burt's Bees
products are wonderful as well and smell great.

8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc?

Never ever used baby powder or baby oil. Baby oil is actually rarely
recommended anymore (at least the traditional type) because it clogs poors.
Better to use mineral oil or apricot oil (Burt's Bees makes a great baby
oil) if you feel the need for oil at all. It is handy if the baby gets
cradle cap.

9. Other good babycare products to have?

I loved all the little gadgets, like the pacifier holders, spoon holders,
toy snappy things to hold them onto the stroller so the baby didn't throw
them on the floor. Basically the types of things they have on the counter
right by checkout to make you grab them last minute.

10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do

I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house?

When you bring baby home: A place for baby to sleep, onesies, footed PJ's,
1 or 2 outfits...sweaters, jackets, infant car seat, wipes, diapers...infant
tylenol just in case, thermometer...common sense stuff

Diaper bag: wipes, diapers, cloth diapers for wiping up spitup, bottle of
water for YOU, small bottle of tylenol, your pediatrician's phone number

Thanks for any info!

You're welcome, hope this helps,

Jen

My mom used that thing on us when we were toddlers to get the boogers out.
EW, I hated that thing!! She was trying to get me not to pick my nose I
guess, I don't remember? But that sucky booger vacuum thing was awful. Ours
was green. Ew.

OMG, what a colour choice!

for their baby so I will know, I hope to end up breastfeeding though....I

1. Best Baby wash?

Johnson's Head-to-Toe Baby Wash

2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs)

Huggies Supreme Care, unscented

3. best disposable diapers?

Target brand for day, Huggies Overnights for overnight (but what works for you
will depend on your baby's body shape)

4. Good formula brand and type?

None at all. Don't "hope" to breastfeed. Just breastfeed. Attitude is a huge
determinant of success.

If for some reason you end up needing to use some formula, it's readily
available. There is no reason to have any of it in the house before you *know*
you absolutely need it.

A better category of items to buy ahead: nursing pads (most commonly liked
brands of disposables are Johnson Contoured, and Lansinoh), Lansinoh ointment
and/or gel discs (Ameda ComfortGel or Soothies) for sore nipples; a nursing
pillow; sport bottles of water (for you) and snacks you can eat one-handed.
Set up one or more "nursing stations" in your house with a comfy place to sit,
and all of the above plus phone, books/magazines, TV remote, etc. close to
hand.

5. Best diaper rash cream?

Desitin

6. Best bottles, brand and type?

Brand depends on what type of pump you plan to use. Whether to use hard
bottles, disposable nursers, or some of each depends on personal preference and
how much you use them.

7. Best baby lotion?

Never used any.

8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc?
9. Other good babycare products to have?

As far as toiletries type items, we never used anything you haven't mentioned
If you're planning to do infant massage, you'll probably want some sort of oil
or lotion, but otherwise it isn't necessary. Don't forget to stock your
medicine cabinet with a few basics -- infant Tylenol, simethicone drops. And
you'll want an infant comb and/or brush whenever your baby grows enough hair to
need it (which could be at birth or not until many many months later), and you
may want a pair or two of baby nail clippers.

10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house?

All you *really* need is a few diapers and a pair of breasts. And in a pinch
you can do without the diapers. g

But of course, there are a few other things that make it a lot easier.

Have on hand:
-At least one full mega pack of diapers in size 1, and perhaps a smaller pack
in size N. You will use 70 to 100 diapers per week at first.
-disposable washcloths and a container for water at your changing station, in
case your baby's skin reacts to the stuff in commercial wipes
-burp cloths and/or receiving blankets
-small, soft washcloths and a soft towel or two (these can be, but don't
necessarily have to be, items specifically sold as baby bath items)

Pack in your diaper bag:
-Several diapers. Exact number depends on length of typical outing.
-Travel pack of wipes
-Burp cloth or receiving blanket
-Change of clothing for baby (in case of diaper leaks, major spitup)
-Clean shirt for you (in case of leaking milk, major spitup)
-Plastic bag(s) in case you end up carrying wet clothes or changing a diaper
somewhere that lacks a garbage can to dispose of the dirty one
-Bottle of water for you
-Small toy
-Your own "purse items" (keys, wallet, etc.)

Yeah, we ended up with about three of them and never used one. Ever.

We did try Ayr saline solution, once (someone gave us some), but breastmilk
worked as well. And DS learned how to blow his nose pretty early on.

I used the Gerber plastic ones. However, everyone who is breastfeeding

seems
to like Avent bottles better.

I was a formula feeder, since I adopted my daughter. Well, actually I
breastfeed with an SNS for 4 days, but ended up stopping because it hurt and
was stressful, and after 5+ years of infertility and 8 losses, I just wanted
to enjoy my daughter.

Anyway, I really like and recommend the Avent bottles if you are going to
formula feed. I like that you can add handles to the bottles so baby can
help hold the bottle themselves, sooner than they would be able to hold it
without the handles. You can also switch out the newborn nipples for faster
and faster flows, then switch out nipples for sippy cup tips in various
flows as well. Plus, whether you buy the sippy cup or bottle base, all the
tops, nipples and tips fit on each, so it's easy to convert baby to sippy
cup as he/she grows up. And, you won't have to purchase all new cups for
baby as they grow. We've used Avent from the beginning, along with Platex
disposables for travel, and just a few months ago switched to sippy cup tips
and purchased additional cups for Taylor. We're hoping to adopt another
baby within the next year, so I can just reuse the bottles and nipples for
baby #2, and then the sippy cups when that child is old enough. They also
have a wide mouth, which makes filling and washing easier.

As far as all of the rest of the stuff goes -- "best" is so subjective,
especially in things like washes, lotions etc. We use whatever baby wash,
diaper cream, and lotion that we were given at our baby shower. It all
works fine.

It's no longer recommended to use alcohol on the cord stump. It will
dry up and fall off on it's own, if you just keep it dry.

Nan

Back in 2001 when I had my last baby plenty of people here said using
alcohol was no longer recommended to them. Well it was recommended to me
and it worked just fine.

Jody - Yes, rubbing alcohol.

I get stuffed up from baby powder so I plan to do whatever is necessary,
never to use this! I also never thought about diapers being perfumed since

I
have never lived with a baby it hasn't been an issue, but I bet I will

have
problems with the strongly scented diapers. I also plan not to use baby

oil,
yech- mineral oil. If I do need it for cradle cap or whatever I may use
Burts Bees Apricot Baby oil, or if I think it will bother the baby I am

only
going to buy a small travel size bottle of baby oil. It grosses me out. So
greasy. Since I have allergies and headaches, I will probably be looking

for
baby wipes and other things also that are fragrance free and irritant

free.

Baby oil comes in gel form now. Never used it so I don't know if it's any
good, what it's like.
