Child-Led Weaning
Patty asked about my incentives for weaning a preschooler.
With Will, he had been obsessed with drums for over a year already--if obsessed is a strong enough word. So I took him to the local music store and showed him a half-size drumset which of course he fell in love with. I then informed him that the drums were for "big boys" and big boys did not have nummies. When he was ready to be a "big boy," he could have the drums but that meant that he would be all through with nummies. I repeated this to him often over the course of the next few weeks. One afternoon, Will got up from nursing and as he walked away said, "I'm a big boy now." He never asked again. We got the drums the next day. Matthew was and is our sports fanatic. So we showed him a pretty good-sized child's basketball hoop on a stand and went through the same routine. He had a much harder time deciding to be a "big boy," but did so eventually with much encouragement and we brought the hoop home. Afterwards he still wanted to nurse, and I told him that we would have to take the hoop back to the store if he had nummies because it was only for big boys--this was usually persuasive. The one time he was most insistent, I offered him some expressed breastmilk in a cup. He tasted it, made a face, informed me it was "yucky" and never asked again.
