Minnesota Children's Advocate Mike Tikkanen to Speak at UN August 13

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Twin Cities
businessman
and Minnetonka, MN resident, Michael Tikkanen, will present a workshop at
the United Nations headquarters in New York City on August 13 as part of
the UN Millennium Development Goals project. This 4th Annual UN Youth
Assembly has attracted speakers from around the globe.
Tikkanen's book Invisible Children (Pre Teen Mothers, Adolescent Felons
and What We Can Do About It), published in 2005, focuses on the shameful
treatment of vulnerable children and how this impacts American society.
For more than a dozen years Tikkanen has advocated for abused and
neglected children and, as a Guardian Ad Litem, has experienced first hand
the impact of programs where children, after having been endangered by
their birth parents and exposed to violence and deprivation, are placed in
adoptive and foster care situations with little attention given to post
traumatic stress syndrome. Tikkanen notes that "of the literally millions
of cases involving child abuse that come before the U.S. court systems each
year more than one third of the children involved will be entered into a
child protection system that may well fail them." He quotes former
Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleeen Blatz, who has stated that
"ninety percent of the children in our juvenile justice system have come
through child protection."
Tikkanen stresses that the failures of child protection also impact on
the educational system. "As a result of the millions of abused and
neglected children who pass through their classrooms, teachers are hard
pressed to manage the serious mental health issues and chaotic living
environments brought to school by their students. This results in drop out
rates of thirty to fifty percent; twenty five percent of graduating seniors
being functionally illiterate; and causes the U.S. to trail most of the
twenty four industrialized countries in categories of education and quality
of life ratings," Tikkanen states. He calls for the U.S. to study the best
results being achieved by many of these other countries in which
universities do the research and politicians agree to implement policies to
solve social problems as they arise.
Tikkanen is the founder and president of KARA (Kids At Risk Always) a
Minnesota-based 501c3 non-profit "action tank" that serves individuals and
organizations involved in grass roots efforts to change public policy and
implement programs to improve the lives of abused children and those lost
in the child protection systems across the U.S.
