Default Double stroller -- thoughts?

Our kiddos are only 13 months apart, and the little one is just 3
months right now. He sits in the bottom seat and loves looking out at
the world.

When we go out people are always commenting on how ingenious the
stroller is. Indeed, we can go shopping and stroll between the aisles
just about anywhere. My husband has also used it as a single jogging
stroller with our older child, and was quite satisfied with the way it
handles. I'm not sure why they say it's not suitable for jogging -
maybe if you have the two kids in it, it's not, but otherwise it's
fine.

And yes, I can confirm that the mud guards solved the problem of
little hands getting caught in the wheel spikes...- Hide quoted text -

I'm glad you like it, most people seem to. I think it'll work out well
for us... I think it will serve us well.

Default Double stroller -- thoughts?

I recently saw a "double" stroller which has a seat for a baby who can sit
up (in other words, not for newborns, for an older baby who can support
their head properly), and a place on the back for a toddler to *stand*. My
DD is 3 and will be specifically 3y7-8mo old when #2 comes. She already does
not like to ride and has not ridden in her stroller since she was about 18
months old. She does try to stand and hold on and ride on shopping carts
(something I do not let her do for safety reasons). But this has me
wondering, are these types of strollers safe? I think DD would like it- she
hates to sit down and ride, we're never out shopping or at the zoo or
something to where she's sleepy and wants to sleep while being pushed- but
sometimes she wants to be carried or can't walk fast enough and I can hardly
pick her up anymore. She's 30 pounds and I am having back pain this
pregnancy.

The way I envision one of these strollers being used is while #2 is little
enough to ride in a stroller, DD can walk with me while I push and if she
gets tired, can just stand and ride right there in front of me. But before I
shell out $100-150, I want to make sure these are reasonably safe?? I've
never seen one used before. They look good for a kid who can hold on and
behave....stand still, and prefers to stand rather than be seated...DD won't
even sit in an umbrella stroller. She fusses to be carried. Or wants to
walk.

I've seen those too and considered one, but I like how my DD will fall
asleep so didn't opt for it,. I think they are safe, here in Canada at
least strollers have to meet safety standards. I know a number of
families with age gaps like yours who have one.

Sounds similar to the buggy board we have. It's called something like "sit
'n ride".
It seemed to be safe for use, but it does make you a long way from the buggy
handles, and I know people who found it gave them backache. Actually once #2
was about a year I more often had #1 in the buggy and #2 on the board as
they both prefered that way round-#2 prefered to stand.

I don't think buggy board type things are available in the US, only when
you mentioned it did I notice that I hadn't seen one here. I remember in
the UK where they were sold and on the packaging etc. they had all sorts
of warnings about invalidating the warrenty and such like. I have seen
type of thing that "beyond the pale" mentions and they really are a lot
more bulky, the stroller ends up being almost as big as a tandem and
looks difficult to manouvere. If your DD isn't keen on being pushed, but
wants to walk on her own, I'd go with it, my DS has just turned 4 so the
age she will be at is pretty recent for us - kids do grow up a lot at
this time, DS has become vastly more aware of what he needs to do to
keep himself safe. He asks to use the stroller if he is tired, but
mostly just walks and I don't find I need to hold his hand as he just
sticks next to me.

Cheers

Eh, I had a Sit'n'Stand, and it wasn't that bad to maneuver,
nor was it nearly as big as a tandem. It was handy on occasion
for the child who normally walked, but was occasionally tired or
needed a break. I didn't really find that it caused back trouble
to push it.

They sell buggy boards in Canada, and I think Bugaboo has a buggy
board too. What I noticed, like Debbie did, is that with the board
added on to a regular stroller you have to really reach for the
handles. I've seen some people having to push from the side because
the board protrudes so much. I think you need really long handles to
make it work. The buggy board is different from the sit n'tand, which
is a one-piece stroller designed to have the extra seat and platform
on the back. Buggy boards are more of an accessory, only for standing.

Certainly with no child on the buggy board (like I had this morning after #2
was dropped off at preschool) it is much easier to push from the side. It's
also almost impossible to go backwards, so turning round can be a problem.

I just googled for it to see if it is the one I've seen, which it does
turn out to be, it also seems to be convertible to a tandem, see
http://www.nextag.com/sit-n-stand-stroller/search-html, so whilst
looking at the pictures I agree it is smaller than some other tandems,
it's as big as it is, iyswim, so is as big as a tandem. To be honest,
I've found all 4 wheeler strollers difficult to manouvere, at least
compared to the 3 wheeler we have, so almost everything looks difficult!

There may be a difference between the new ones and
the old models (I probably got mine in '97 or '98, so it would
have been a very early model). Mine certainly wasn't convertible
to a tandem.

I guess I'm kind of cheap LOL but we can afford the Phil and Ted's...
I don't know, I just don't want to buy something so expensive and just
use it for a couple of weeks. I can get one today with the doubles kit
for free (plus some other accessory I'm not sure which one) which is
a great deal but still $500. Maybe I will Craigslist my 2 year old
Peg Pliko so I won't feel so bad about getting a new stroller...

You say you are cheap, but you are getting ready to spend $500 on a
stroller? Yeek. I just used a simple Graco double stroller that I got at a
garage sale and paid $20 for and it lasted through 3 kids. Now I can
understand if you need something more rugged since you will use it a lot,
but then I would just buy the Graco new instead of used. I really don't like
the buggy board thing people are talking about. When my kids were tired of
walking, the last thing they wanted to do was stand. So having a seat for
them in the stroller was best for us.

My two kids are 2 years 4 months, and ten weeks old. I thought we
could get away with not getting a double stroller for a variety of
reasons (I use a wrap for the baby, toddler rarely rode anyway, of
course that was before baby got here!, etc) but I think I was wrong
and life would be a lot easier if I got the double.

We live in the city, have a tiny house with a narrow walkway, steps up
to a small porch and very little storage area (no driveway or garage
etc). I'm thinking of getting a Phil and Ted's -- I like the idea that
it's also a single, so we aren't stuck with a double forever. It's
also easier to manoevre and store than the front-and-backs and double
widths. It is pricey though so I am hesitating.

What kind of arrangements do you all with 2 kids use to get around?
Especially those who live in a city and are out walking a lot with the
kids in tow?

I have a 2yr 2 month and a 6 week old baby, I also childmind an 8mth old. I
have the phil and teds e3 for my 2 and a buggypod attached to the side when
I need the extra seat for the 8 month old.

I LOVE my phil and teds. I have a car seat in it right now for the baby, a
sunshade ready for the summer with it and bought a changing bag to match. I
wouldn't be without mine. I've had a graco double, mothercare double and
mcclaren double but nothing compares to my e3.
