Post-partum swelling?
I gave birth to a baby boy last friday afternoon. Going into the
hospital I had developed a little swelling in my feet and hands but nothing that would be considered "cankles" or excessive. Baby and I came on Monday and since then my ankles and feet have began to swell up, my right foot being more puffy than the left. My fingers have also began puffing up as well but not nearly as much as my feet. It's not going down or going away and is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and painful. I've tried applying an ice pack and putting my feet up when I can but doesn't seem to be doing any good. Any suggestions as to how I can get the swelling down or should I contact my OB or family practitioner? Could something be wrong? I'm beginning to become really concerned about it as it's starting to get painful. Help!?! Angela Quinn Alexander 5/07/04 |

Mainly I think because two nights in a row, I slept with my feet up on 2 or 3 pillows for basically the whole night both nights -- per my Dr's advice. I didn't think it would make any difference but it was amazing how it did. hth Carla #1 due 5/14/04 |

I have *never* had (or even heard of) post-partum swelling. |

Post-partum swelling?
I know that Monika had elevated blood pressure for about two weeks after birth. I would suggest going in to the doctor and having your BP checked. They may also want to run other tests. But, I'll suggest you call your doctor, just in case. This last time, my edema (swelling) was very bad and I had to have a low-sodium diet and was given diuretics. Nan |

Post-partum swelling?
I talked to the nurse at the women's clinic while DH and I were there picking up some forms for his FMLA leave and I talked to my Doctors OB nurse, Amy. She seemed to think that I was just retaining fluid and it could take up to 3 weeks for it all to go down. If I'm still puffy after 3 weeks I'm to call them back. I think it may have went down a little bit in my ankles today but my hands still feel tight. *sigh* I just hope it doesn't take too long. |

Post-partum swelling?
Angela,
I swelled up like a puffball after my first baby (7-11-03) and I swelled up everywhere. My feet were huge and I had ALOT of swelling around my kidneys. (it was like having enormous love handles) My legs were swollen, my face was swollen. It was awful and I really know how you feel but I promise it will go away! My doctor told me to drink lots of water and avoid salty food. I was also told that swelling after birth is normal even though it doesn't feel normal at all, right? My swelling was completely gone in about 2 weeks. The water-logged feeling was something I was totally unprepared for and something no one ever tells you about. Congratulations on your new baby and hang in there and drink lots of water and you should feel great in no time!! Wendy |

Post-partum swelling?
I had bad swelling for a week after Alexandra was born. Then all of a sudden
it went away. They told me in the hospital that it was normal post partum. I would contact your dr anyway just for peace of mind. Love -- Nicky Proud mamma to Alexandra (03/22/2004) |

Apparently it's not uncommon to have feet and ankle swelling post-partum if you had IV fluids during labour. If you did it will go down slowly and probably take about 2 weeks to completely go away. -- Cheryl Mum to Shrimp (11 Mar 99), Thud (4 Oct 00) and Mischief (30 Jul 02) |
