Default Motherhood and me

I just wanted to post another post. My milk has come in and Rachel is doing
a great job! I am not even sore (yet), and Rachel has never had any problems
latching on. It's just that *I* am awkward at the breastfeeding positions
except for lying down on my side. I still haven't gotten the hang of sitting
and breastfeeding, yikes. In the hospital the lactation consultant helped me
and once she positioned Rachel all was well. But when I try by myself, I
don't have enough hands and Rachel's arms, well, I never know what to do
with them...it's all in shambles!

And on the pump, the Medela Harmony handpump which is similar to Avent Isis
(which I have never tried)...I give this pump a thumb's up! I heard some
complain that the Isis has too many parts- I haven't seen it so don't know,
but the Medela is VERY simple to put together, very few parts- youbasically
just screw the top on, and I was able to get milk right away with it. I can
see that if I plan to keep pumping I will want an electric. But for anyone
wanting a handpump I highly recommend the Harmony. The hospital here loves
the Avent Isis as well and is starting to praise the Harmony too. I can say
I like it!

Also- I already am so glad I got a Boppy pillow, Rachel loves to be propped
up in it. The Graco PacknPlay is in our bedroom and is VERY VERY useful. We
use the bassinet when she is not in bed with us and the changing pad is so
convenient and it has a tray that holds supplies. I would not do without
this item! Rachel isn't yet too thrilled with the Baby Papasan but she does
like the Ocean Wonders bouncer sometimes. She's really just too tiny and
wants to be held.

I am still swollen but am back down to 10 pounds less than what I weighed
before the pregnancy. it is so odd to me! I never gained back the morning
sickness weight loss so when people ask me how much weight I gained, it's
confusing, because technically none. And Rachel was 7 pounds 11 ounces and
is perfectly healthy- actually she's pretty strong and sturdy. In the
hospital they gave me so many fluids I swelled and my first day home I
weighed exactly what I did before pregnancy but it went away with the
swelling. I did not exercise much during pregnancy, I didn't feel like
walking a lot etc so I am not firm (and boy do I have stretch marks!)....my
boobs are huge. Mt stomach is still poochy, not that I expected it not to
be. But I have no headaches/migraines, no heartburn, more energy. The only
thing wrong is my stitches huuuuuuurt.....I am on pain medication 24/7 and
they gave me breastfeeding safe medication but I still don't like taking
narcotics while breastfeeding, I have to take Lortab along with 800mg
Motrins. I must have had a really bad tear from the forceps. But that is the
only thing wrong, I don't have any other problems.

I can't believe how calm I feel, and how not-nervous I am. My mom is coming
over next week a lot to help me when my DH goes back to work. We are getting
along, it's so odd it's scary! She has done a couple of typical things, but
I see her differently now. It's easier to overlook, and just see that she
loves the baby so much and is so tickled to be a grandmother. I do realize
that she has been through a lot with her side of the family, and I see the
joy when she is around Rachel.

Have faith, this will come. It took me forever to figure out how to hold
Sarah to nurse, but eventually you'll get it worked out. Boppys are a
godsend, though, aren't they? Hey, you got what I found to be the hardest
position (as well as the most necessary for the early feeding days/nights),
lying down, right off the bat! Good for you! That one took me weeks to
master.

(and I never learned to nurse and hold a book at the same time. Evidently
that position will forever escape me. )

Some of us are lucky enough to be able to enjoy our moms when our babies
arrive. I always had a great relationship with mine, but the moment I
looked at my daughter I had a complete perception shift, and realized how
*she* felt all those years of rearing me - the love, the concern... It
really brought us even closer together. And it's hard not to adore someone
who adores your child.

Jill, I'm so very happy for the way things are working out for you.

I think that's one of the things people tend to underestimate
until they've been there. Seeing how much your parents love your
baby creates a powerful thing you have in common, and opens the
door for some good things to happen. That doesn't mean that you
wipe out an entire history of problems in one fell swoop, but it
creates an opportunity. It's wonderful that you're seizing the
opportunity, and I hope it keeps going well for you.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Congratulations, Jill

Just a hint regarding your baby's arms getting in the way - if she is chest
to chest with you, one arm either side of the breast, then arms can't get in
the way. This is true for either the football hold or the cross-cradle
hold. Tuck her right into you, chin on breast, and there is no room for
hands/arms! If you can't get it though, try wrapping her arms out of the
way until you're more confident with the positions other than lying down.

It sounds like you're doing a wonderful job, though! Keep it up, and keep
us posted

I'm so happy for you, Jill! It's too bad we don't live closer to eachother,
we would have so much fun!!!

I fortunately didn't get any stretchmarks (which amazes me since I ballooned
past 200 lbs!).

My armpits are finally going back to their natural color. How odd that they
darkened? Whazzupwitdat?

Morgan has really taken a liking to her Aquarium Swing. She's totally off
of the Kick and Play bouncer for some reason. She used to like it.

I have gone out to eat 3 times this last week and Morgan has been such a
good girl!!!!

Now, if I can get her to like the Baby Bjorn, we will be in business!!

The Boppy is the best thing ever. I am not nursing but it is so handy for
bottle feeding, too. DH loves it. He uses it more than I do. I can position
Alexandra so well in it that sometimes we both fall asleep on the couch and
at the back of my mind I know that I am not going to drop her (since it
usually happens at 3 am!).

I am so happy to hear that you are getting along with your mom. I really
believe that being a mother is the most exciting, emotional and overwhelming
but also the most satisfying and rewarding experience of your life. And it
only gets better every day!

Cannot wait to see some pics of Rachel.

Love

This is so true. And also, my mom aggravates me a lot with inappropriate
comments (IMO), but when I am TRULY in pain and agony or whatever, she is
(and I realize has always been) extremely tolerant and patient when everyone
else would get tired of dealing with me. Also, she is always on my side when
I am hurting. The only times she is not, are when she knows that I am not
being hurt, when I'm just being a butt.

She has been truly helpful and great this past week!

Yep!

Wow. I didn't gain really any weight to speak of other than gaining back the
morning sickness weight I lost, but my stomach got huge and I DO have lots
of stretch marks!! I hope Mederma helps! But, I am also very fair skinned.
Rachel has the prettiest olive skin and I don't know where she gets it- I am
pasty-pale and my husband isn't dark skinned either- he actually has
sensitive skin. So who knows where the baby got her beautiful skin!
