Most physical abuse begins with "spanking"
http://www.freep.com/news/childrenfi...0_20040330.htm
Children First Spanking often fails parents, kids March 30, 2004 BY L.L. BRASIER FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Ann Marie Shawley's abuse began with spankings and ended with shaking, head injuries and burns that killed her. Almost all experts on child abuse advise against spanking as a means of discipline. It is ineffective, creates aggression in the child and can be the first step in losing control as a parent, they say. Studies on spanking show: More than 90 percent of American parents admit to spanking -- among the highest percentages worldwide -- but only a small percent seriously injure their children. Two-thirds of child abuse cases that end in serious injury begin with spanking. Parents are most likely to spank children ages 2 to 5, but spankings have little long-term effect. A young child will commit the triggering act within an hour of a spanking about 50 percent of the time and, in the course of a day, will commit the act again at least 80 percent of the time. Experts advise using time-outs for younger children and removing the cause of the misbehavior. Taking away privileges for older children is effective. For help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 800-799-7233, or the Michigan Family Independence Agency, 800-456-1000. Or call local FIA offices: Oakland County, 248-975-5010; Macomb County, 586-412-6109; Wayne County, 313-396-0300.
