Carseat milestone
DD has hated her infant seat since she could distinguish between it and just
hating life (the first four weeks she cried all of the time). She's right around 24" so I finally broke down and got her a convertible seat, which looked a lot less hot and more comfortable. Thanks to everyone who had praised the Britax Marathon in prior postings, because DD just loves it. She doesn't cry when she's strapped in and she even smiles in it. If I tuck a burp cloth into the straps (her favorite 'toy' at the moment) she's in heaven. What a milestone...we're out of the infant carrier. -- Melissa (in Los Angeles) Mum to Elizabeth 4/13/03 |

Melissa, I've been wanting to ask how you're doing with the full-time mom thing. Ever so long ago I remember you posting on mkp about deciding to "retire" and not feeling entirely great about that. How has it been now that it's really happened? I had the opposite expectation -- figured that once the bundle of joy was here I'd be content with nursing and changing poopy diapers and blowing raspberries on her tummy. I quickly realized that I needed to get out of the house and interact with adults as well, so I've gotten involved with some moms groups and mom/baby exercise classes. But the natives are still getting restless... Though I wouldn't trade being a full-time mom for anything right now, and I really do value what I'm doing as the most important thing anyone can do, blah blah blah, I want to be productive beyond the milk I make to grow more Bug. I'm currently looking for volunteer opportunities that would allow me to bring the Bug along. Suggestions welcome! Kate and the Bug, June 8 2003 PS -- Dunno if you recognized me from alt.wedding, but I think you and I have been moving through life's milestones in lock step over the past few years, with you always just a few months ahead of me. Funny, eh? And BTW, glad your DD is happier with her new carseat! Like you, I'm a bit bored right now, but being a full-time mum isn't as bad as I'd thought. I've met a number of women who have similar situations to mine (educated, professionals taking a few years off) who are about my age too. We're all desperate for adult company, so we've formed a play-group. There's also another play-group we go to and a bf'ing group each week. We try to schedule at least one play-date each week too. If dd had anything even remotely resembling a schedule, I'd start volunteering, but she doesn't, so I don't feel that I can plan anything since she might be asleep and I hate waking her. -- Melissa (in Los Angeles) Mum to Elizabeth 4/13/03 |

Heh heh -- I love the idea of a "play group" for kids under a year old. My moms club has the same thing. It's clearly not really for the kids! If dd had anything even remotely resembling a schedule, I'd start volunteering, but she doesn't, so I don't feel that I can plan anything since she might be asleep and I hate waking her. Will she sleep in a sling? That's why I figure the Bug could go along with me wherever others are willing to accept her -- she sleeps a lot en sling, and now that she can sit up and look out she finally likes being in the sling awake too. So I figure unless she's being really fussy she won't demand my full attention most of the time. Good luck finding stuff -- if you uncover any great secrets, post them for us!
