My mom told me I couldn't get my ears pierced until I was 13, so I
pierced them myself with a needle and some rubbing alcohol when I was
10. They got infected of course because I didn't have sterile
earrings. She gave in and said, "If you want them THAT bad..." and took
me to get them pierced at a drug store after the infection healed.

do
it, the better off we'll all be (because she won't be old enough to know

to
pull at her ears, etc.)

Our pediatrician gave us the ok and I found another pediatrician's office
that does it.

What are you feelings/experiences about piercing baby girls' ears?

Thanks,

I was actualy REALLY allergic to my earings.. I still can not wear cheap
mettal.. for some reason I can wear the hypoalergenic ones at WalMart though
and they are the only ones Bonnie can wear.. We NEVER let them get more
then a little pink before we took the earings out and put the peircing studs
back in. It would be irresponcible not to check them everyday for redness
and cleanliness. She has never had an outright infection from her earings
but I am a stickler for keeping an eye on them.

I believe that it's a personal decision that should be left up to the

child
when they're old enough to make the decision for themselves. That age will
obviously vary from child to child.

I'm not against piercings, mind you, I have 7 myself, but my daughter may
have no interest whatsoever in having hers pierced. At age 5, while all

her
cousins and several friends have had theirs pierced, she has no desire
whatsoever to have earrings. Maybe she will one day, maybe she won't, but
I'm leaving the decision to her.

That said, as a child photographer I see 15-200 children every day, at

least
1/3 of which are babies. I've seen it all... parents who only pierced

their
baby's ears "so people would know she's a girl", people who did it "so the
baby wouldn't have to feel the pain", etc... etc... I've had people pierce
thier baby's ears then immediately bring them in for pictures (wtf are

they
thinking?) while they sit there and scream for hours (literally, though
obviously not the case for every baby). But- I've also seen people bring

in
babies with some severe infections... things I'd never imagined could

happen
to an earlobe... even though the baby wasn't old enough to pull on them (I
assume from improper care or from formula pooling around the ear, I don't
know...). A considerable amount of people have complained about reactions

to
the piercings (one baby had a metal allergy and her earlobes were swollen
and oozing when they came to pick up their pictures about a month after
having them pierced - I'm sure this is rare, but still....) and about the
care involved with trying to keep them clean all the time.

Anyway, there's no way I'd even consider having a baby's ears pierced.

Just
my opinion...

That is funny because when I was 18 I had my cartalidge peirced on my right
ear and I was told it would hurt like crazy and it never bothered me..
Bonnie cried for 10-15 secounds and then we showed her a mirror and she
laughed at the baby and that was the end of it. She also does not cry for
shots or the finger pokes at the WIC office.. She hates getting goop on her
fingers though
Did you really need drugs for ear peircing? I never even took tylenol.

Just after I had my first I was living in a community that pierced girls'
ears as babies.

A week or so before I was going to get it done, I went for a second set of
earrings.
The pain was awful, much worse than I remembered from childhood. But I was
able to deal with it thorugh drugs and careful management.

I didn't get her ears done.

Now at 8 she doesn't want them done though I offer from time to time.
That may change with puberty.

My own private opinions... I wouldn't do it. I don't understand why
people pierce their body parts. Anyway, I would leave it up to her -
she can do it if she wants to when older.

Appartently I am the only one that thinks yes on this matter... hmmmm... I
still think they are cute

I don't have any opposition to piercing the ears at an early age. My
family waited until my oldest sister was 18 (I must have been 10 then).
We all went there together & it became our decision to go on with the
procedure or not. I kinda like this idea better.

JMO, and since you are asking in the first place, we probably stand on
different sides of the fence on this. Personal choice issues aside, I just
don't like the look of earrings on a baby. No offense please to anyone who
has pierced their baby's ears, I just don't like the look and there's
something about it that always makes me uncomfortable. Can't quite put my
finger on it.

I have a friend who did her daughter's and she said she nursed her the whole
time and she hardly flinched. Just fyi if you decide to do it, but I'd be
afraid of the whole pain association thing. I'd think it would hurt worse
than a vaccine. Did the peds office say if they would use a numbing cream?

Good luck with your decision.

I think they look cute but I'm not going to get it done on my daughter
for a different reason to everyone else. I have a friend and a niece
who both had their ears pierced before they were 1 year old and as
they grew both of them have found that the earrings are not centred
properly in their earlobes. My friend ended up with hers too close to
the side of her head and my niece has one that's nearly in the centre
of the lobe and one that's noticeably off centre. It's probably a
good idea just from that point of view to wait until the ear lobes are
closer to an adult size.

Newly born preemies manage to pull out their IVs and such, I'd think the
baby would still manage somehow?

I have quite a few piercings myself, so let me first say that I quite like
them in certain places. My Mum took me at the age of 8 to get mine done, at
that time they weren't smart enough to get two people and do two at the same
time, so after the first stud went in, that was *IT* for me. I had one ear
pierced until I was 15 LOL

Mum's were done, but she didn't think it necessary to put that on me unless
I wanted them, so I decided to do that with my daughter also and leave it
until she was older. My only sibling, who is older and had a daughter 7
years older than mine, decided to take it upon herself, knowing how I felt,
and get my daughter's ears done. I was LIVID, as was my mother and now have
a damned good reason to shove in her face, they are NOT centered as they
were when she was 1 year old, her lobes grew and now they sit high. My
daughter was NOT very understanding of the fact that they needed to be
cleansed and turned daily, they bothered her a LOT.

I think it's a personal thing, if it's something you choose for your child,
or let her choose it for herself at a later age. Just go in with open eyes,
it bloody hurts, they can and do get infected and caught on clothing. If you
choose to do it, there's a topical spray available that numbs an area for
15-20 seconds, I can't remember the name off hand, but it was on an
"American baby" episode I recorded so I can get the name of it for you if
you'd like. You might want to use that for shots also, I plan to get some!

I had my daughters ears pierced at 4 months old. She only cried for a
second and it was all over with. I had no trouble with her touching them
at all. She is 8 years old now and loves them. I have always kept real
gold in them so they would never get infected. She even has a set of
diamonds her Uncle got her for her 1st birthday. :-) I feel it's better
to get them at a young age. This way they don't pull at them and you can
easily put the solution on. I always said if she got older and did not
like them, we would just take them out...end of story! :-) She loves
them tho and I'm glad we did it at a young age. Christi
