projectile vomiting??? :(
Micah vomited all over me today, about a minute after a 10-minute feeding
(he usually eats 10-15 minutes on one side each time) -- it was very dramatic and really looked like the entire contents of his stomach, and it arched out (twice) probably going about 8 inches from his little mouth. After that, I let him rest for about 1/2 hour and then gave him just a little (maybe 3 minutes) which he promptly spit up -- not vomited that time -- and he did this again for the next 3 feedings (also really short ones). I looked up projectile vomiting on google and of course the website on pyloric stenosis popped up, and I of course spent the next 5 hours sobbing, imagining my baby's going to have to have abdominal surgery. I think I've regained sanity somewhat (although I really never imagined the mommy gig was going to be so emotionally draining!! and I never was the hypochondriac -- that's supposed to be DH!) -- but has anyone ever experienced this? I'm going to try feeding him much shorter durations more frequently and maybe stopping wearing the nipple shields (there are little foam things in them to catch leaked milk -- maybe they're collecting bacteria?? gross). I don't think it was anything I ate, since I've only eaten leftovers that didn't seem to affect him the other day. Em |

*hugs* Emily It may be nothing just so you know. Some Babies just like to
pick a day and vomit.. Bonnie did anyway. Xavier just did all over but I suspect his was less then it looked like since he is not a daily spitter. If he had pyloric stenosis then you'd have known about it much sooner... like after the first good feed. #1 did one really big projectile vomit (all over dh it was :-) hee hee) and #2 had a couple of days when she seemed to bring a lot up, but settled down again. Just wonder whether he's got a cold, because the mucus running down the back of the throat can cause this-it's what caused #2 to do it. Debbie |

Really, try not to overanalyze and make all types of changes. You'll drive yourself crazy. Sometimes babies are just spitty. Jessica (4.5 weeks) projectile spits up like this every few days. Just this morning she was sleeping about one foot away from me, she started upchucking and a huge blob of milk hit me from a foot away about four inches off the bed! I kid you not. It wasn't curdled, it was all the fresh milk I just fed her. . Really, try not to start self-diagnosing and thinking worst case scenario. Just keep an eye on him and if he seems like he's in discomfort or it gets worse, by all means call your ped, but in the meantime, just know that some babies just spit. BTW, why are you using the nipple shields? If you are thinking that you *can* get rid of them, by all means, do. JennP. |

Monkey Boy's vomit, which I mentioned in another thread this week, went about as far as your baby's...into my mouth and down inside my shirt. I nearly lost my own Thanksgiving dinner then, and again when I pulled my shirt off. The odor and especially the lingering taste of vomit caused a reflex reflux! I feel a gag coming on now, just thinking about it. FWIW: there are nipple shields without this foam, just plain silicone. I used them (without BF was a virtual no-go for me) and sterilized them whenever I felt the need. I think I used the Avent ones. I hope the vomiting is nothing serious. I'd take him to a ped and have it checked if it occurs again, just to make sure. -- -- I mommy to DS (July '02) mommy to four tiny angels (28 Oct'03, 17 Feb'04, 20 May'04 & 28 Oct'04) guardian of DH (33) |

Thanks, everyone! He hasn't done the big vomiting anymore, just little
normal-looking spitups, so I'm feeling alot better! I'm still going to try and feed him a lesser amount more frequently since I think my milk's coming in pretty fast (I filled 5 oz pumping yesterday, 5 min/side) and it might be gagging him -- seemed to work last night. JennP -- the lactation consultants gave me the shields while I was in the hosp. since I've got pretty flat nipples and he wasn't latching on very well. But I think he might be good enough at it by now that I don't need them anymore -- I'm going to try today, anyway. Plus, they tend to fill up with milk and then spill all over me if I'm not paying attention. :P Em |

Em I use breast shields too (no nipples to speak of, even after pumping, sigh), but mine don't have any foam in them (I use the silicone Medela ones), and if Katy is latching/unlatching a lot (as when she has a cold), she'll swallow a lot of air from the tip of the shield, then nurses some more , so there's milk on top of the bubble when she burps. I now give her a dose of simethicone before she nurses (infant Milicon drops) and though she still spits up a little now and then, no more of the forceful vomiting. Try either giving your baby simethicone (ask your pediatrician), or holding her upright for a couple of minutes before trying to burp her, so that the milk can settle below any air she's swallowed before the air comes up. Make sure you burp him really well- that was always when my kids would do the
huge puke thing, if they weren't burped enough. It sounds like maybe you have a lot of milk- if he's eating for such short periods he's probably getting quite a bit in a short time and may be swallowing a lot of air trying to keep up. I found that sitting them up and bending them slightly forward with my hand gently on their belly worked better than the over the shoulder burping thing. He's only a few days or so old, right? If it was truly 8 inches or more and that continues, definitely contact your pediatrician. laurie mommy to Jessica, 3.5 years Christopher, 19 months |

When I was between 4 and 9 months of age, and had an undiagnosed cow's milk allergy, I could hit the wall from SIX FEET away. Are you sure that 8 inches is even considered projectile? I'm certain it was dramatic, but I guess I wouldn't worry. And if you are worried, I'd call the doctor, because no one here is a medical expert. Good luck! Cathy Weeks Mommy to Kivi Alexis 12/01 |
