Default How to search PubMed

First, go he http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed

Note the tabs Limits and Clipboard: these are links to special
interface panes.

Use the Limits pane to limit a search to, eg, studies involving women,
or newborns, as appropriate. Also use it to refine the search query
to author, title word, etc.

Once you have some search results, click the box next to the items you
like to select them and then use the "Send to" pull-down menu to send
your selections to the clipboard. Accumulate all relevant search
results there. The clipboard does not accumulate duplicate items.
Use the Clipboard pane to list, select the display type, and do
something with your selections. I like the Abstract Plus display for
reading but for downloading for future use I like the MEDLINE display.

So that your search results will include more papers in languages
other than English, or that use variant terms, examine the MeSH terms
applied to the most relevant search results that you already have
(select a display type that shows the MeSH terms), or search the MeSH
database itself (link on the left sidebar) to find the precise MeSH
term for your topic. Then search for those terms.

PubMed is not as comprehensive nor as powerful as Science Citation
Index, but it is very good and it is public. And for purposes
relevant here, PubMed probably is as good as comprehensive.
