Default Will / Can my toddler's red hair change color?

Neither my wife nor I have red hair so we were really surprised when
our daughter was born with red hair. She's now 18 months and it's
still red. My mom says my hair was red when I was a baby and then it
went blonde and then brown and now it's very dark. So we're debating
if our daughter's hair will change color or not. Everyone loves her
red hair so we're hoping it doesn't change.

It will probably follow your pattern. It's fairly common for little kids to
outgrow their red or blonde hair.

I have to agree. Sam was born with dark hair like mine, then started to
turn blonde and now he's dark blonde in winter and medium blonde in summer.

I thought I was the only one who had a dark haired child where the
hair turned blond!!

Anyway, my dad was a towhead, and as a young man he had light brown
hair, and as an older man his hair was dark and going grey. My hair
has always been dark, as was my mom's. My husband and his sister were
strawberry blonde.

Two of mine were bald for a considerable time after birth. My oldest
two had brown hair. The youngest two were blond - the third one had
what my mom called 'dandelion fluff'. She's now got brown hair. My
son was born with dark hair and it came in blond at the roots when he
was just a few weeks old, and is now a medium brown also.

I see this same pattern in my grandchildren, although my oldest
granddaughter is still blonde.

Might change. #1 was born with dark hair. Gradually over the first year it
turned red. At about a year it was really that bright red orange, I'm
surprised myself when I look back at pictures how red it was. Then it
started going fairer, and was for a time golden with a slight hint of red,
and now (at 6yo) it's started darkening again. I think it will be similar
colour to mine at the end, which is a light brown.
Interestingly neither of the girls have been as fair as either me or dh were
as children. Both of us had that almost white fair hair, although dh is very
dark now and I'm not blonde any more. #3 is dark on top and fair down the
sides, so we'll see how he turns out!

I have very dark brown hair (thick and wavy), my husband's is kind of a
dark blonde/light brown (thin and wispy). Our first son had virtually no
hair until around 21 months or so, and when it finally started to grow
in, it was red and curly. We were very surprised, and kept asking people
"does his hair look red to you?" because we were sure we were seeing
things. He is now seven, and while his hair is not as curly, it is
thick and wavy and a beautiful rich red that some women pay hundreds of
dollars to try and duplicate! Anyway, there is red hair on both sides of
the family, but at least a few generations back.

Our second son was born with hair as dark as mine, and by age 3, it
turned the color and texture of my husband's, which is very common color
on his father's side of the family.
