Default Happy Surprise and Question

I just found out a couple of days ago that I'm pregnant -- quite a
surprise, but a very happy one so DH and I have no complaints! I
*wasn't* taking folic acid, though (dumb, I know, but I just wasn't
thinking). I started taking supplements the day I found out, of
course, but I'm wondering if I've missed the boat. I'm almost five
weeks pregnant. Is folic acid still helpful? Is there anything I can
do to make up for not having been taking it? Thanks!

Bryna, thrilled to be expecting #4!

definitely still helpful it's up to 12 weeks that it's relevant, I was
checking recently what the start timing was and was surprised to find
it's 3 months before conceiving, I didn't see any info about range of
efficacy dependent upon start date, though there must be at least some.
I'm afraid I'm not entirely clear how folic acid is stored/used in the
body, you may be able to help my taking a slightly higher dose to try
and boost the levels in your system, but I'm not sure if that's how it
works.

Cheers
Anne

Congratulations! I wouldn't stress too much about the folic acid.
It's sometime in the fifth week that the neural tube closes, so you'll
be getting it in there before the game is over. And fortunately the
risk of neural tube defects is very low to start with. Also, if you
live in the US, over the past decade or so flour (and perhaps other
foodstuffs?) are now enriched with folic acid. It's becoming harder
for research to show the association between taking folic acid
supplements and birth defects, as most of the population has a more or
less adequate supply.

B'shaa Tova Bryna! I wouldn't worry about the folic acid. Just start
taking a prenatal vitamin now.

Thanks -- I have been taking about 200% of the daily recommended
allowance in the hopes that it might be helpful, though I also don't
know if that's how it works. I figure it can't hurt, though.

Thanks, Kate ( I love your sig by the way!) I guess it's a good thing
I've been eating all those pastries in the past few months, then.

Thanks, Alison! The day I found out I was pregnant I started a three-
day migraine (looks like this will be one of my *fun* pregnancies!) so
I took a folic acid supplement instead of the whole vitamin as it was
easier to tolerate. But I've got my vitamins all ready to go and I'm
just davening that this pregnancy sticks around and results in a
healthy baby, please G-d! How are your kinderlach doing? They must
be getting so big!

Aww! Congrats!!!!
As far as folic acid goes, I really have very little advice. I had had
enough issues trying to remember a basic pre-natal vitamin...

B"H they are fine. #1 lost his first tooth yesterday. He will be 7 in
Oct. I can't believe it. The other 4 are fine too B"H. I am trying to
convince #3 to wear a kippa and tzitzis before school starts in 3
weeks. He is very stubborn LOL. but my mother in law just came back
from Israel and bought him a pair of each there so I am hoping he will
wear it since its a present from bubbe/zaidie's vacation.
