Default Is Mental Illness Genetic???

The book "First Person Plural" by Cameron West (excellent insight into the
disorder, well-written memoir)

Also: http://www.sidran.org/didbr.html
"Recently considered rare and mysterious psychiatric curiosities,
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) (previously known as Multiple
Personality Disorder-MPD) and other Dissociative Disorders are now
understood to be fairly common effects of severe trauma in early childhood,
most typically extreme, repeated physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. "

http://www.cmhawdb.on.ca/disassociation.htm
Disassociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a severe dissociative disorder
that involves a disturbance in both the memory and identity of an
individual. The individual uses defense mechanisms involving splitting,
idealization, devaluation, denial and/or taking on the personality of
another in order to cope with trauma experienced in childhood

Multiple Personality Disorder (or Disassociative Identity Disorder - DID

as
it is now known) is generally caused by (normally severe) abuse in early
childhood.

Never heard that before. Can you show your sources for this, please?
Debbie

Therefore this is a mental disorder that is not genetic or
hereditary, though the predisposition for things like depression and
schizophrenia for example can be. Sorry to hear about the father of

your
baby. That's a tough diagnosis and often needs years of therapy/drugs

to
overcome. There are lots of websites and books on the subject. I would
read up on it if that ends up being the diagnosis.

Just wanting to know If mental illness is genetic? The father of my

unborn
baby, i have just found out he has severe mental problems. I dont know
exactly what his condition is but it is very likely to be like

multiple
personalities. Can this be passed on to my baby?

Well my dad has Aspergers, so do I so does my son. Also I have
things like depression and OCD.

Asperger's Syndrome is NOT a mental illness. It has a tendency to be
inherited but it's not a certainty. It almost certainly has nothing
whatsoever to do with Kelly's fears.

It's neurological and it origins from the mind - doesn't everything?

Just thought I would share my experiences.

Andrea.

Bipolar is believed to be hereditary; there's a team at Johns Hopkins
trying to isolate the relevant gene.

That's rather like conflating asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer into
one as they all affect the lungs.

Actually bipolar does have a higher incidence within related persons, and
that is a known risk factor.

Many mental health problems do have a recognized familial connection of a
higher risk if there is family history, to ~some~ extent. And some
disorders have a much stronger connection than others.

HOWEVER, they are only at this point considered predispositions, not
guaranteed "passing on" of a problem. It simply makes a person more
vulnerable to a specific problem, and if conditions are "right" (life
situation/circumstance, events, personality, etc..) they are at higher risk
and more likely to develop the problem.

I shared my experiences, as I know how it is when the same thing passes
through the family.

I might be NT but my husband, father-in-law, brother-in-law and
possibly my son aren't. It strikes me that despite your experiences you
know bugger all about most things, Andrea. You persist in jumping to
conclusions without reading carefully, you spread malicious accusations
and give incorrect information without doing any research. And if you
think that all neurological issues are the same thing and that AS is a
mental illness you clearly know bugger all about your own condition.

I think the predisposition for MPD/DID is also suspected to be heritable.
Which is to say that you can have two people exposed to the exact same
stressors during childhood and only the predisposed individuals will
develop MPD/DID -- and they could pass that tendency on to their kids.

I dont know exactly if it was multiple personalities but he was severly
sexually abused by both his parents when he was younger but would openly
talk about this. He also constantly lied. He would tell one person something
and tell another something completely different. He was sad one minute and
the next happy and the next he would be throwing things around the house and
trying to strangle me threatening to kill me aswell as himself if i tried to
leave

Ok where in my post did I actually say apergers was a mental illness? I do
not spread malicious (A bit strong wasn't it?) accustaions either. This is
NG! people share what they know, you do get people who research their
answers, but I believe life experience is far better than some study that
was done. If people wanted answers based on reasearch they can use a search
engine.
Believe me I know more about it than you ever will - I have lived with it
all my life. Just watching someone with it is not the same as being
aspergers trust me.

Andrea.
