Boyfriend Suspected of Giving Baby Sleeping Pills

When a baby girl had several episodes of vomiting blood, her mother
became suspicious.
May 21, 2007
An Elk Grove man charged with child endangerment is being held in
isolation at Sacramento's jail, his arraignment delayed. But there are
new details surfacing about allegations he gave sleeping pills to his
girlfriend's baby.

Friday, Elk Grove police arrested the mother's boyfriend, 20-year-old
Luke Davis. He's charged with child endangerment and mixing harmful
substances in someone's food. The infant, named Chloe, was seven-
months-old at the time.

"He loves her very much. He stepped in, acted as a father, a role
model, taking care of her. That's why the allegations come so hard,"
said Davis' attorney, Michael Wise. Davis is not the child's father.

The 19-year-old mother and her baby reportedly moved in with Davis at
his Elk Grove duplex near the end of last year. The baby's mother told
police she took her child to the doctor three times in March when the
baby girl began vomiting blood. The mother became suspicious of Davis
and contacted police May 10, but there's no explanation as to the
lapse of time.

"Anytime something like this happens you do a double-take and try to
figure out why did this happen?" said Chris Trim with the Elk Grove
Police Department. "We can't comment on his exact motive behind this
incident ... suffice to say we do know why he did it."

This is the most interesting part.
Hopefully we will hear this in later reports.

Wise said according to reports he's reviewed so far, police have at
least two recorded telephone calls between Davis and the unidentified
girlfriend. Wise said he's spotted at least 10 to 12 denials by Davis
in those transcripts.

"He adamantly and repeatedly said, 'you know I didn't do this. I
wouldn't do this to Chloe, I love Chloe, you know it's not true.'
Allegedly later on in that conversation there's some sort of
admission. I haven't had a chance to look at that yet," said Wise.

Tuesday's arraignment was postponed because Davis was being held in
isolation at Sacramento's jail, diagnosed with an illness. The bailiff
reported Davis tested positive to TB, but Wise was surprised because
he was told earlier in the day Davis had been cleared by jail medical
staff.

Davis' mother and father were also in court, leaving without speaking
to reporters. "They're pretty devestated, obviously," said Wise.
"Being involved in the criminal justice system is completely foreign
to them. They're nice folks, very devastated and very upset."

In the Elk Grove neighborhood where this allegedly happened, some
neighbors were suspicious of the allegations, calling Davis "a very
kind, very gentle soul." They said the couple broke up a few weeks
ago.

Davis remains in Sacramento County Jail on a no- bail warrant. His
arraignment was rescheduled for Friday, May 25.
