Default 2 1/2 year old not talking

Hi, i have five daughters, all of them have started to verbally
communicate at very differant times. My second eldest started to talk
very late nearly 3 1/2. After all the tests were done and all proven to
be ok, the doctors advised us to work on all the other senses and wait
for the speech to arrive along with the new experiences. After about 6
months she started to try to talk and soon was a chatterbox. Funnily
enough now at 15 she is the most articulate and a joy to converse with.
She also is a fine photographer so in a way she still perfers to use
non verbal ways to comunicate.

I know this doesn't give any constructive advice but i hope it will
help with this really fustrating time.

I wish you well

sha

He has his well-child checkup in a little over a week, and that was
something that we were going to talk to his doctor about. His speech
therapist and playgroup "teacher" both seemed to think that he is most
likely not autistic (they both work with other autistic children), but
we still want to check on that! His speech therapist also recommended
genetic testing at a local university..... I'm not sure what that would
involve, but that's something else that we were going to ask his doctor
about.

.................................................. ........

My oldest had a similar history. He is not autistic, but he was finally
diagnosed with oral motor dyspraxia with functional dysarthria and some
dysphasia. He had a total of 10 years of speech and language therapy... He
can talk, but it is not quite normal and he has some serious expressive
language issues especially in school work. While he tests normally in math
and with visual intelligence tests, he tanks if it requires him to write or
even explain an answer. He has never, nor will he ever pass one of those
tests that various states require for high school graduation. He has been
in special ed. since he was three years old, and when he graduates from high
school next year he will qualify for vocational training due to his
disability.

This is not to depress you... just to let you know that the "my kid did not
talk until he was 3, 4, 5, 24 and is doing fine now" stories are not
universal.

Get yourself over to http://www.asha.org/public/ and possibly
http://www.apraxia-kids.org/ to read about kids who are NOT autistic who
have speech and language problems.

Also, while it is not in the speech therapist's place to refer for medical
issues, you should check with your doctor for other referrels. Though I
don't think a genetic test is in order until your child has been seen by a
pediatric neurologist. Our son was referred to one who did testing to rule
out Landau Kleffner Syndrome (a seizure disorder that causes loss of
language) and certain metabolic conditions. A neurologist, or as someone
else suggested a develepmental pediatrician could point to the right
direction.

My boy didnt talk till 3 1/2, and hasnt shut up since

He will be fine, he will talk when he needs too....my son didnt talk I
believe because we all knew what he was saying without words, he didnt feel
a NEED to talk...UNTIL we had some visitors from america for 2 weeks staying
wih us. He spent the first week utterly frustrated they couldnt understand
him, by week too he was speaking in many sentances at a time.
I put it down to lazyness with him.
All the best

My son will be 2 1/2 in a couple weeks, and so far, he has only learned
how to say "uh-oh" (which he does use appropriately). He babbles all
day long, but refuses to copy any words that we say to him. He has
been learning some sign language, which has been VERY helpful (saving
all of us from many temper tantrums). He has been going to a local
playgroup through the school system, working with a speech therapist
for about 6 months, but the speech therapist has not started coming to
our home yet to do one-on-one therapy. He has had his hearing checked,
and he hears very well. He is a very happy and healthy little boy who
loves to play games and figure out how objects work (toys, doors,
phone, remote, shoes, etc....). Basically, I was just wondering if
there are any other parents out there who might have a child in the
similar situation, and if you would be willing to share your story /
success with me! I need some emotional support with this!! Thank
you!!!
