Co-sleeping question
I am a new mom and co-sleep with my baby.
I adore this arrangement. Every night my baby flings his little arms around my neck and puts his little face right up to mine, and every morning I wake up to his smiling face and he gives me the most heartwarming hugs. I'm so thankful I get to experience all of these precious moments. As of now, baby waits for me to get up - or he tugs on my hair or babbles to wake me. He always stays right next to me, lying on his back, or his side. Now that he is 7 months old and beginning to crawl & get more active, I'm wondering if he'll just get up one morning and crawl or roll off the bed while I'm asleep? We have a king-sized bed and baby sleeps on the inside between my husband and I. (baby sleeps right next to me, while hubby is closer to the other edge). I can push his crib right next to my side as a barrier, but what about the foot of the bed and the other edge. Will my baby crawl over me to get to freedom? Do babie's get curious and check-out the boundries of the bed, or do they continue to stay close? What did YOUR babie's do? Thank You, 'worried co-sleeper' |

Co-sleeping question
We've had this problem. My son has rolled/crawled off the bed a few
times... but usually, he hits the floor and keeps going, so I think maybe he taught himself to scoot off. One thing you can do is teach him to scoot off backwards, 7 months shouldn't be too early for that. Also, if he wakes you up now, chances are he'll keep doing it. Our son usually slaps me and pulls my hair for a while, trying to wake me up, if I ignorehim... he crawls over me and does it to his dad. :-) When he got to be very good at crawling, I set up a sidecar. The crib is right next to the bed, with the drop side completely removed... it's also against the wall so it can't move the other direction. This way... he has even more room to travel before he can think of getting off the bed. |

Co-sleeping question
I am the mother of a two & a half yr old, and we originally co-slept in a
queen bed on a frame. One day my daughter crawled over me in my sleep, and right off the bed. I was very upset - and SWORE I wouldn't sleep through being crawled over again - unfortunately, I did. She was fine, but my husband decided we were taking the bed off it's frame the next day. We did, and we've been thrilled since. She rolled off the edge a few times (we have a thin foam mattress under the futon on the floor) but it's not enough of a distance that she even wakes up, LOL. Sometimes we wake with her butt in bed & her head on the floor, or vice versa. We're very happy this way, and when she graduates to her own bed, we'll put ours on a frame again. Good luck!! Co-sleeping question - Baby fell off bed!
I am the original poster (see post below). Oh my GOD, just out of
pure coincidence-the next day my baby fell off the bed. But it wasn't while we were sleeping. I got out of bed to use the bathroom. As i've done time and time again without incident. I made sure baby was in the middle of my bed and gave him his favorite toy, ran to the bathroom & I SWEAR not even 10 seconds went by when I heard the most horrifying THUD. It was the most gut-wrenching sound and I screamed because I knew he fell off the bed. I was shaking when I saw him face down motionless and quiet. I think he was stunned! I am so, so lucky that he fell on a pillow & didn't get hurt, but he bit his tongue. As he cried on my shoulder-seeing his blood on my nightgown made me feel like the most horrible mother created. I cried more than he did. I hate myself for allowing this happen. I realize now why books/magazines say to NEVER leave a baby alone even for an instant. I would never leave him in a bath for an instant, so why did I leave him on the bed? *Because I stupidly thought I "knew" my baby and he's always stayed on his back & played with his toy in the past when I used the bathroom. *Because I was never gone more than a minute and I was less than 10 feet from him. *Because I didn't want to put him in his crib because he hates it so much and screams the second he's in it *Because I didn't think he could get into any trouble in mere seconds. Lots of reasons, but no excuse for what happened. Thanks to those that responded, and I hope what happened to my baby won't discourage anyone from co-sleeping. What happened isn't even classified as a co-sleeping 'accident'. It was just a stupid mistake where mommy left baby on the bed for 'a few seconds' alone and he crawled off. . After this scare, I'm going to use a mattress on the floor in a guest room. Even still, I wont EVER leave baby alone again for a potty break - even for a second. I'll just put him in his crib until I'm done! 'worried co-sleeper' wrote in message ... I am a new mom and co-sleep with my baby. I adore this arrangement. Accidents happen no matter how hard you try to prevent them Once kids start trying to walk it gets really bad! Just a thought: Have you got all your child locks installed on the kitchen drawers, have you got an RCD security cut off on your electricity supply, put a stair gate up to stop baby from crawling down the stairs, remember to switch off any appliance that could draw water while you are washing the baby to prevent scalding... etcetera !? Don't worry co-sleeper the best thing you can do is to get some sleep yourself so you can be allert when you are awake ;-) |

My two year old has fallen 3-5 times in a "significant" way, IMO. It happens. Heck, you even took precautions to lessen any possible injury, and the kid probably doesn't know what happened anyway. Everything turned out fine, so relax. It's not worth raising your blood pressure over. P. Tierney |

Co-sleeping question - Baby fell off bed!
Thanks for the support and as each day goes by, i'm realizing that
accidents will happen, and I just have to try my best to prevent them. I went through so much to have this baby, and tend to worry about him a lot. Chris, you mentioned 'RCD security', what is that? I have my baby gates on order and have already babyproofed the cupboards, toilets and electrical outlets. For a BRIEF moment I had second thoughts about co-sleeping, but when I awoke to his smiling face and hands on my face this morning-I knew I made the right decision. There are various ways to make things more secure, like more the pillow on the ground thing. We also create a short pile of pillows on each border, as needed, if one of us isn't in the bed with her. I'm not now, for example, so my spouse is on one end, the child is in the middle, and a pile of pillows takes the edge of the bed where I sleep. Another option that I've read, depending on the layout of the room, is pushing the bed against a wall, thus creating one solid border. P. Tierney |
