Default The Questionable Efficacy Of Flu Vaccines... And The Pandemic ThatWasn't

There is an informative article at

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dana-u..._b_311621.html

For example: how did WHO declare flu pandemic alert of the highest
level? Clearly flu kills fewer people than malaria, what's going on?

It turns out that WHO simply changed the definition of the word
pandemic, in May 2009.

The old definition can be found at

http://web.archive.org/web/200807090...a/pandemic/en/

It says:

"An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus appears
against which the human population has no immunity, resulting in
several, simultaneous epidemics worldwide *with enormous numbers of
deaths and illness*." [emphasis mine]

Compare it with the new definition at

http://www.who.int/csr/disease/influenza/pandemic/en/

"A disease epidemic occurs when there are more cases of that disease
than normal. A pandemic is a worldwide epidemic of a disease. An
influenza pandemic may occur when a new influenza virus appears against
which the human population has no immunity. ... *Pandemics can be
either mild or severe in the illness and death they cause*, and the
severity of a pandemic can change over the course of that pandemic."

Isn't it neat? An outbreak of any new disease, however mild can be
declared a pandemic once it is widespread. The definition has been
changed after the first reports of swine flu, just in time to declare
pandemic, and - voilà! - it has been declared!

More from the article:

"the number of adults needing to go to the hospital or take time off
work did not change between those adults giving the flu vaccine and
those who did not."

Researchers "did note that the flu vaccine is effective in reducing the
flu in children over two years of age, but they found little evidence
that the flu vaccine was even effective in reducing school absences.
Further, they found “no convincing evidence that vaccines can reduce
mortality, hospital admissions, serious complications and community
transmission of influenza.”
