Default Dilating with no labor

Is this her first, or has she delivered other babies?

Yes, this is her first.

That makes it slightly less common, but still nothing
at all to worry about. Frankly, on top of that, unless there
is some other indication for worry, there's no need to be
doing internal exams to assess dilation and effacement prior
to labor. There's a potential risk of rupturing the membranes
and introducing bacteria--not a big one, but why take any
risk for information that doesn't provide any value? Dilation
and effacement don't really predict the onset of labor in
most cases. You might check if, say, she was significantly
overdue and induction was being considered (to see if an
induction would likely be successful), or some such thing,
but it's largely useless in predicting when labor will start.
She could show no progress at all and go into labor in an
hour, or be significantly dilated and effaced and go into
labor weeks later.
So, bottom line is I just wouldn't be worried
about it. The baby will come in his or her own sweet
time...as they all do ;-)

Best wishes,
Ericka
