How big of a deal is head circumference of the baby?
I had a sonogram (actually two) because my ob thought the baby's head
is too small (3rd percentile) and the baby itself is small (7th percentile). Now he's concerned about the head circumference and wants me to get a second opinion with a specialist and take a level-2 sonogram. So this will be my third sonogram. Any opinions, experiences? If you need any more details please ask. Thanks. |

Any measurement at or below the 3rd percentile would be a potential indicator of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). I believe in some cases, IUGR is seen more in the head circumference than in other measurements as well, so that is definitely a indicator for a better look at the baby. It may be that you are simply having a very small baby, but it is wise for your doctor to refer you under the circumstances. I've forgotten how far along you are. The good news is that if you are at term, the treatment for IUGR is simple: give birth, the sooner the better. IUGR is usually an indication that the uterine environment is deteriorating in some way, but doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the baby at all. -- Be well, Barbara Mom to Sin (Vernon, 2), Misery (Aurora, 4), and the Rising Son (Julian, 6) Aurora (in the bathroom with her dad)--"It looks like an elephant, Daddy." Me (later)--"You should feel flattered." All opinions expressed in this post are well-reasoned and insightful. Needless to say, they are not those of my Internet Service Provider, its other subscribers or lackeys. Anyone who says otherwise is itchin' for a fight. -- with apologies to Michael Feldman |
