Default 5-year old boy with strabismus condition

My 3 year old son also has this condition what the Dr did for him was send
us home with Glasses and then after a year he had a patch, he was wearing it
for a month from morning until bedtime or an hour before, then we went back
and he wants him to wear it for another month but this month hasn't been
going as well..he will not let me put it on. So I don't know what they
will say when we go back..... the next thing if it isn't getting better will
be the consideration of surgery, which I really don't want him to havbe to
go through..but if he won't wear the patch that is the only thing we can do.

As far as sucess I am pretty sure that surgery is the last resort and done
in more extreme cases as a first measure if it is really bad. The doctor we
go to in Ottawa, Canada is supposed to be the best in Canada.
From what this doctor has told us if it is unsuccesful it is doue to the
patient and the muscles behind the eye. The success of the surgery is
definatly something that relates to both the doctors skill and experience
with this condition as well as the tools.... I would think most have similar
tools and techinques.
The doctor we go to is supposed to be the best in Canada....he is in Ottawa
but works by referal only, his name is Dr. Bonn. You can ask you current
doctor for another opion and try to get in with him.

Good luck

My 5-year old nephew in China has strabismus of the eyes. He had a
surgery two years ago, but was not very successful. I am searching
for treatment information for him in US. It seems that surgery is most
possible way to cure his eyes. I am wondering:

1. What's the successful rate of the strabismus surgery in US (generally)?
2. What's the main possible reason of an unsuccessful surgery ? Is it more
because of the patient's particular condition, or the surgery technique ?

3. Still regarding the surgery, is its success most relying on some
advanced machine tools, or relying on the doctor's skill ?

4. Any suggestions for hospitals for child's strabismus treatment ?

Thank you very much,

Han Xu
