Lactation and neuropathy
Hi,
I have been exclusively breastfeeding DS for almost eleven months, and for the past five have been having tingling along the mental nerve pathways in my chin and now an itching under my right shoulder blade and a tingling in my little finger. I don't have diabetes and did get my jaw checked out by a maxillofacial surgeon a couple months ago. Everything seems to be okay, but the tingling persists and perplexes. I was just wondering if the lowered levels of estrogen during lactation might predispose a woman to neuropathy. For instance, there is a kind of oral tingling (burning mouth syndrome) common to postmenopausal women and almost nobody else. Anyone have any thoughts or experience? Has anyone ever developed cervical disk problems from holding the baby all the time or night nursing? Thanks, Beth |

Thanks, Beth When Laszlo was a newborn I developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands from holding him while nursing. I had to wear braces for a few weeks/months to feel better, along with repositioning my hands while holding him. Also, during pregnancy, your ligaments are softened to accommodate the changes your body goes through. Once you deliver, these tighten up again and can certainly put pressure on nerves. Hope this helps, Jen |
