Default Water or no water?

Does anyone give there baby water?

I heard (read) NOT to give a baby any water because they get enough
through B/M or forumla, then I heard they should have
=91=91some=92=92..friends and family cant beilive that I dont give her
any water.
the last time I was in for her check up the nurse asked if I was giving
her water, and she was kinda confused when I said no. and I didn't ask
when the dr. came in.
the ped. gave me a hand book and it said no water unless it is very very
hot outside,,,,
this is just a question that always slips my mind at the Dr.s office....
she is on all formula now.

TIA

couldnt get him to take it... so that solved my problem lol

From www.askdrsears.com...

"Does my breastfeeding baby need bottles of water?"
Breastfeeding babies do not need extra water, though formula-fed babies
often do. Your breastmilk contains enough water for your baby, even in hot,
dry climates. Formula contains higher concentrations of salts and minerals
than breastmilk does, so that extra water is often necessary for the kidneys
to excrete the extra salt. Also, because of less efficient metabolism,
formula-fed infants lose more water. In breastfed babies, not only is extra
water unnecessary, giving bottles of water to quench baby's thirst may also
lessen the desire to breastfeed. This will interfere with the balance
between mother's milk supply and baby's demand. Bottles of water are also
likely to cause nipple confusion. A baby who is too warm or thirsty, but not
hungry, can satisfy his need for more water by feeding more frequently and
just enough to get the watery foremilk, but not necessarily the creamier
hindmilk. Breastfeeding babies are great self-thirst-quenchers.

I didn't give Matthew any water until he was 6 months and started solid
food. I gave it to him in a sippy cup and basically it was just for
practice. He was bf, fwiw. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I give Morgan about a 1/2 cup of water a day. I just found Nursery water so
I may try it. I just usually give her spring water (unless my mom isn't
looking and then I'll just give her tap). LOL!!

I gave Bonnie 3 oz of water mixed with 1 oz of Apple Juice at 3-4 months
because it was about 100 degrees inside my moms house and I noticed she was
spitting up A LOT after the constant formula feedings. I asked the Dr about
it and he said to feed her fewer onces of formula more often but Bonnie
wanted none of that so I tried the water thing. She stopped spitting up
right away and drank a more reasonable amount of formula after that.. She
had been up to 3-4 oz every hour or so.. That may have been fine for most
kids but she was only like 10 lbs at 3 months.. Her stomack was not empty
but she was thirsty.

I gave Taylor water in a sippy cup at an early age, just so that she could
play with the cup and learn how to use the sippy spout. I figured anything
that she spilled wouldn't matter -- it was only water! She mastered the
sippy cup pretty well at a fairly early age, since she had access to it for
a while. But it was much more of a play thing than a beverage for a long
time. Now that she is almost two, she does have a few cups around with
water in them -- one in her crib and one in the family room. She mostly
prefers apple juice or milk, but occasionally will ask for ice for her
water, and drink that. At this age, I let her decide what she wants to
drink, within reason.

formula doesn't change its concentration in hot weather so it may be
necessary to give a baby extra water, watch for the signs, though I'm not
100% sure what they are!

We did give ours water, when he was exclusively breastfed, on the hottest
day of the year, which was the hottest day ever recorded in the UK, so I
reckon the normal rules don't apply!

which is about right given her age, though I read somewhere you should only
give tap water, not mineral water, bottled water can have very high mineral
content.
