Potty trained!

"Laurie" wrote: Nikki wrote in message 3f40f64e$1_3@newsfeed... Wow - congrats to you both!! Luke is the same age and I think I'll start training on my next long weekend off. I hope we have an easy time as well. So did you go cold turkey into undies or stick with diapers a little while and do scheduled potty breaks? Cold turkey with undies. I found that if she was wearing a pull up or diaper, she'd pee in it; but if she was naked, she'd always use the potty. So I finally bit the bullet and went cold turkey, and she's done great. Funny thing is, she absolutely refuses to go on the potty just because mommy says it's time, ie if we're leaving the house. That made me a wreck the first few days until I learned that she really, truly just didn't have to go! laurie mommy to Jessica, 28 months and Christopher, 4 months *This email address is now valid* I think it's important to teach children the value of the prophalactic pee: we always pee before getting in the car, going for a long walk, whatever. I explained to my kids that I knew they didn't "have" to, but there might be just a little pee in there, and it was the polite thing to do to start a journey with an empty bladder. I had a friend who use to tell her kids that any pee that came out when they didn't really have to go was magic, and they could make a wish on it: she said it worked for years! meh -- Children won't care how much you know until they know how much you care |

news:3f40f64e$1_3@newsfeed... So did you go cold turkey into undies or stick with diapers a little while and do scheduled potty breaks? I'll chime in here as well, since Julie is also a recent "convert". ;-) She's had a potty for about a year now, and has had several phases of interest where she would practice each aspect of potty use, over and over - clothes off, sitting, getting toilet paper, clothes on, flushing, washing hands - but never "produced" anything. So she knew already how to do everything for herself, I was just waiting for her to be ready to actually *use* it. We then went cold turkey into undies too. I tried Pull-Ups, when she requested underwear a couple months ago, and they were worthless. She treated them exactly like diapers. Also tried real underwear at that time, but (possibly) gave up too soon, as I got too frustrated with the mess (there was no successful potty use at all). She was extremely resistant to scheduled potty breaks at that time. If I made any mention of going potty she'd insist, "I don't want to." Finally I said she had to choose - either pee in the potty or go back to diapers. She chose diapers. It was actually Julie that initiated the switch both times - she told me one morning, "I want to wear underwear." This time, I just resigned myself to the cleaning and decided, no going back now. It was the third day of wearing underwear before she had any success at all, so it was getting difficult to stick with it but I'm glad now I did. Since then she has been getting better every day and is so proud of herself! It is the best feeling, to see your child achieve something that's important to them. -- Cheryl S. I think the no going back thing on the second attempt is pretty important. I turned back with Hunter on a number of occasions (after 5 days or so) and I think it prolonged the process. I'm getting lots of encouragement out of this thread, thinking Luke might be ready. That would be so great. I really love the potty training milestone even though I know others see it as no big deal really. -- Nikki Mama to Hunter (4) and Luke (2) |

I tried Pull-Ups, when she requested underwear a couple months ago, and they were worthless. She treated them exactly like diapers. Mine children did/do too. However, my daughter was a late night trainer and still wet her bed once or twice a week up until she was 7. Pull -ups were great for her to take on a sleepover. Her friends' mothers knew about them and would quietly dispose of them for my daughter in the morning. Also, I've just started day-training DS2.5 this week (2 successess in the toilet this morning, one big puddle on the carpet, currently napping in a nappy) and I find pull-ups are good for taking him out in because we can practise using public toilets and toilets in other people's houses with them on. Also tried real underwear at that time, but (possibly) gave up too soon, as I got too frustrated with the mess (there was no successful potty use at all). I hope it works as well for us this time. I have to admit this is the least favourite time for me in terms of this specific area of development. I can see months stretching ahead of having to know where the nearest toilet is at all times and being prepared to drop everything for that mad dash to get there in time. lol Tai |
