And my letter to the school board:

Excellent letter. I would go to the media with this as well, based on
their response. This is totally unacceptable.

If there is no response, I would contact the PTA and ask the school board
directors at one of their meetings.

Goldfish nutrition information:

Nutrition Facts*

Amount Per Serving (serving size) = 55 crackers

[snip nutrition data]
.

The RDA for adults (US) is 2400 mg per day. The recommendation in the
UK is much less (1600 mg per day). That's for adults though the US
says it is also for children over 4 years of age.

Thus a single serving (and kids will eat more if given a chance), is
almost 11% of the daily sodium intake allowed. If you take the UK
standard, it's 15%.

Though, IME, most kids eat nowhere near 55 fishies ... unless you just
hand them the bag and give them free rein. When the preschool kids
would bring goldfish as part of their lunches 15 or 20 was more
typical.

But ... having finally looked at the list, I agree with all that it's
insane. There is nothing 'healthy' about most of the stuff on the
list. Little Debbie cakes are 'healthy?' Yeah. Right.

I am so glad this gift-giving isn't our normal school practice. I don't
WANT
fifteen sets of pencils. We have enough pencils here already. And
crayons.
And propelling crayons (I remember desperately wanting those in 5th grade.
DS1 has a set and he is only 5!). And paints. And even scissors. NO
MORE!!!!

How can you ever have enough crayons?

Er, we're not very artistic round here? Might change in a week or so; DS1 is
going on his first school excursion, to the Art Gallery of NSW!
