Albeit on an old horse in dire need of new shoes, taking frequent rest
stops and not really sure of the way....

I keep hearing about a web-site sponsored by one of our oregun counties
by the name of "oregonhelps.org" where you can go enter some basic
information and find out what state/county programs you might consider
you as qualified for whatever help they provide. My unemployment has
run out and I'm finally looking at the necessity of dropping my
aspirations down to less than half what I was making before my job was
eliminated so I thought I'd take a quick look at the site.

Using my current info - no income at all - I found that I qualify for
more in food stamps than I ever spend on food in a month, not counting
the meals out that I share with my daughter.

There were some other things for which I might qualify, but what I found
most interesting was that not only was there the expected blank for
entering the number of dependent children living with you, there was
also a place to enter CHILD SUPPORT PAID MONTHLY. Now I haven't spent
time playing with the numbers to see if it actually counts for anything
- like, would I no longer qualify for the food stamps if I had no CS
obligation - but the fact that it was recognised as an expense is
encouraging...

It sure is! That is one of the many glaring problems with government programs--
Not only for what it does to NCPs and their families, but it also works the
opposite way for CPs, qualifying them for programs no other group qualifies for
with similar net incomes. Our case was one of the most blatantly unfair in this
area.

Interesting site. I found that if I take what my brother is making
($1680.00 pre-tax, for the month), deduct the CS award ($1010.50), then and
only then does he "qualify" for any state assistance.

I wonder... I have to check something out..

Was there also a place where the CP could put in what they receive, to
help determine whether or not they honestly need assistance?

I'm pretty sure there was, but it was listed with a seperate group of
incomes - the "unearned" type - so I assume it's not treated the same as
earned income. Wish I had the time to go back and play with the numbers
for a while to see just how CS affects things on both sides of the line.
