Default I thought I had the answer!

My twins didn't do the carpet just the walls, and worse we stay in an
apartment. My son (who is the youngest twin) colored all over his sister
with a green marker while they were taking a nap. I didn't even know we had
markers in this house.

Oh Brigitte! I can just imagine the mess. Even if it is washable, I bet

that
was so difficult to clean. As if you can bend over at this point!!

I'm sure it will be hilarious when you recall this when your children call

you
up complaining about the messes their children are making!

My solution was to insist that the markers stay in a box in the kitchen and
can only be used at the kitchen table / island. It cramps their style a
little now (Hanna would like to draw in her bedroom) but until I can trust
them not to leave them around for Holly, the rule will stay.

And ALWAYS and ONLY **washable** even though they cost quite a bit more.
The extra that you spend for the markers you save in bleach, spot treater
and aggravation.

To reduce cost, I also used to check that the lids were on properly when
they were done using them -- even though I had taught them to close up the
lids, sometimes they were too stiff or it got forgotten. They last a long
time, I find, although they might be less acceptably long-lived in a more
craft-driven household.

Seth -- I'm curious as to why your wife has a desire for non-washable?

We just gave each of my kids a set of markers (non-washable). I
didn't like the idea, but my wife talked me into it. So far, it's
been OK (knocking on wood).

Yes, you are a brave Mom! LOL!! It will be a good memory in about 20 years.
g As for markers, paint etc... It is a table only activity. I sit with
them and put every single one back into it's carton and on top of the
refrigerator when they're done. They're way too precocious to be left alone
with them. ;o) I also let them color the walls of the bathtub with those
bathtub crayons though, and they LOVE that!! I just started giving them
those color wonder markers that are clear, but change to their respective
color with the special paper they come with. That is a BIG hit around here
and I don't have to worry about a mess.

It's not that she prefers non-washable. The kids found a set of
markers in the store and they wanted it. I was against it, but my
wife thought it wouldn't be a problem.

Oh, how horribly disappointing -- I was hoping there was something terribly
clever I could learn here ;-)
