Default Used infant/child carseats - what the heck to do with them?

OK, so we're not supposed to *take* used car seats, so I think it's not
responsible to give away used car seats, but then, what to do with them? I'm
clearing stuff out of my house, but I'd hate to put three perfectly good hunks
of plastic and foam and fabric into a landfill.

What do we do with these?

Well, you're not supposed to take used carseats *unless you know their
history* It would be fine to take one from a trusted friend or
relative.

I think that there was some discussion here about the plastic
deteriorating over time, so that carseats were not safe even absent an
accident after a certain period of time. I don't recall the
conclusion, but I'm sure you could google it.

If the seats are still safe, what about giving them to someone who only
has kids in the car occasionally, like a grandparent or aunt/uncle?

One we had was too old so I tossed it, but I've given away 2 on
Freecycle. It's okay for people to take them if they're not too old
and haven't been involved in an accident.

I dont' know anyone right now who needs an occassional carseat. I *could* put
it on Freecycle, but aren't folks not supposed to trust me to take it?

Also, how old is too old?

It depends. I've simply stated the age and that it's never been in an
accident. I actually got raked over the coals for posting a Heads Up
on my local freecycle list to let people know they need to be careful.
Some of the emails I got from offended people were unreal.

Also, how old is too old?

It also depends. Most have an expiration date on them. If it hasn't
been exposed to extremes in temp. then I'd probably allow 8 years.

Is there a recycling symbol (the arrows with the number inside to designate
the type of plastic) on it? If so, take everything off of it and put it in
the recycling bin, then use the fabric and foam for a pet bed.

Make sure to cut the straps before you toss an old one. I did that so no
one who picked through my trash would be able to use an 8-year-old car seat
without realizing it might not be safe.

If they're past their marked expiration date, or past
five years old, cut the straps, mark them "do not use" and
throw them away.

Best wishes,

Thanks for mentioning that. I did cut the straps for that very
reason.

Maybe your local government authority has a service to deal with them, or ring
the manufacturer. It's generally a bad idea to put them out for clean-up: I
see people scavenging them (eek!).
