for a vehicle of that type nor the expertise to drive
it safely.

MOUNT CLEMENS MICH -- A man was arraigned Wednesday on
charges stemming from a hit-and-run accident in which a
1-year-old girl survived being dragged a mile in her stroller.

Robert W. Gallas, 47, of Macomb County's Clinton
Township was charged in 41B District Court with six
felony counts. His attorney, Brian Legghio, entered
innocent pleas to all six, said Linda Anderson,
criminal clerk.

The charges included one count of operating while
intoxicated, causing death; two counts of operating
while intoxicated, causing serious injury; and three
counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident
resulting in serious impairment or death.

If convicted, the first count is punishable with a
prison sentence of up to 15 years. Each of the
remaining five counts is punishable by up to five years
behind bars.

Bond was set at $1 million and a preliminary
examination was scheduled for Feb. 14, Anderson said.

A telephone message seeking comment from Legghio was
left at his office after the arraignment.

Clinton Township police accused Gallas of driving his
sport utility vehicle into a couple Tuesday evening as
they pushed their baby girl in a stroller alongside a
road in the township, which is in northeastern metro Detroit.

The accident killed the child's father, Roland Young
Jr., 20, of Hamtramck. He was pronounced dead at Mount
Clemens General Hospital.

The baby, Deborah Young, was listed in fair condition
Wednesday at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann
Arbor. Her mother, Sharita Wilson, 19, was in fair
condition at the Mount Clemens hospital.

The accident was reported at 7:18 p.m. Tuesday. It
happened on a dark stretch of road right in front of
Brian Yonka, who was headed in the opposite direction.

Yonka, a 23-year-old Army reservist from Mount Clemens,
said the vehicle appeared to cross the white line on
the road's right edge before hitting the family and
continuing down the road. He immediately stopped his
car to help aid the victims and try to identify the
hit-and-run vehicle.

"I turned to look because I was trying to get a license
plate number but all I could see was sparks and stuff
coming out from underneath the Jeep," he said.

The sparks apparently were caused by the stroller --
which had become lodged in the grill with the baby
still inside -- being dragged along on the pavement as
the SUV sped away.

Yonka did not see the stroller and police didn't learn
about the baby until the mother inquired about her as
paramedics treated the woman.

A team of citizens, police officers and firefighters
found the crying child still strapped inside the
mangled stroller about a mile down the road. She
suffered cuts to her face.

The hit-and-run driver apparently stopped the vehicle,
freed the stroller from the grill and drove off. A
police officer arrested Gallas around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The cause was drunk driving, it has little to do with the SUV. People have
driven drunk and killed people in compacts.

The cause was drunk driving, it has little to do with the SUV. People have
driven drunk and killed people in compacts.

1- Maybe he would have had better control if he was in
a compact
2- It is the arrogance of the typical SUV driver that
makes them think they are kings of the road and allows
them to think nothing can happen to them.

Then I guess I am wasting my time here.

In SUVs we are talking about a class of vehicles,
responsible for 75% of the vehicle fatalities, which is
grossly disproportunate to the number of the class on
the road.

The drunk's condition. in this case, was the primary
cause. The secondary cause was his choice of vehicle
which was too much vehicle for his capabilities.

As a onetime Land Rover owner, I have the knowledge
and experience.

No, he demonstrated negligence and a total lack of control, it wouldn't
matter what vehicle he was in. I'm sure when sober he wouldn't try to run
over people.

It is the lack of inhibitions brought on by alcohol that causes people to do
stupid things when drunk.

I found Le Mod Pol particularly disengaged when he wrote:

In winter. In Michigan. Yer joking, right?

Yea, it's pretty amazing. My mom had a minivan but now she has an
Explorer and she's gone from a pleasent, law-abiding driver to
a monster-truck driving, fire-breathing, CAR-KRUsh1nG MAN1IAC!!!!!!

Yes, it would have been much more acceptable if the drunk who ran
these people over ran them over with a car.
sarcasm off

I find your stat of " 75% of the vehicle fatalities" questionable at best.
Where does this stat come from?

All this killer has to do is say he's a republican and he'll get off
with a wrist slap just like highway killer and republican icon Bill
Janklow did. Repugs are all criminal coddlers.
