did you mean to use Nicolas, Steven (Stephen) or Robert? i
certainly hope so, because actually naming the poor child with
a diminuative is unkind. it's hard enough to get along in the
adult world without being saddled with a 'baby nickname' as
your given name.

I don't think Nick, Steve, and Bob/Rob are so bad if that is what he
likes as a name. As someone else mentioned - the person can use Steven
as an adult nickname just as easily as the Steven can go by Steve.

I would agree with you if he had suggested a Nicky, Stevey, or Bobby
though. Those names wear out at about age 4 but the ones he had listed
can and do last a life time.

My mother's name was Rosa. Her nickname was Georgia. She even had
Georgia on her driver's license. Very few people outside her family knew
her legal name. It didn't seem to cause her any trouble what so ever.
My cousin (who is my age) is Beth, not Elizabeth. Her mother regrets
that decision but Beth herself never has AFAIK.

I hang out on another group where a mom felt like she named her girls
wrong and so she had them legally changed to something totally different
when they were 6mos old - just up and changed them, lol.

I may be biased though because I have a Luke, not a Lucas.

Luke has been a name in it's own right for centuries though. at
least i've never heard of a New Testament Bible Book of Lucas

According to one web site: Luke has 11 variant forms: Loukas, Luc, Lucas,
Lucian, Lucien, Lucio, Lucius, Luck, Lucky, Lukacs and Lukas. [from:
http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Luke]

So, perhaps Luke and Lucas are derived from a common predecessor, or simply
developed similarly in different cultures/languages.

Yes, Luke and Lucas derive from the same origin, which is Greek. See

and while an adult *can* legally choose to change their name
many don't want to offend their parents by doing so. or (in my
case anyway) the parents think the given name is perfectly
good & refuse to use the changed name. i just dropped my first
name, which i loathe, & use my middle name, which is nice,
short & androgynous since neither of my parents use *their*
first names, i claim to be standing on family tradition
lee

I find even when I want to use my Full first name most people want to
shorten it anyway and in a way I don't shorten it. My name is Victoria
which my mom shortened to Tori. If I introduce myself as Victoria
people ask me if I go by Vicki.. Not that I ever got the logic of that.
It is like when I was pregnant with Xavier and people asked me if I
would call him Bill or Will because his middle name is William.

When I named one of my dds Elizabeth, I knew I did not want her called
Liz or Lizzy (which I loathe), so from the beginning we called her
Beth, which I like. She has a cousin named Elizabeth who was called
by her middle name - cousin did not like her middle name and is now
called Liz or Lizzy.

I actually know a lady who named her child with a middle name that she
liked better than the first name so that (she said) when she was in
middle school and using purple or green ink and making little circles
to dot her 'i's and deciding to go by her middle name, she would be
called by the name her mother preferred from the beginning. I do not
know how this worked out. The child's first name was Tracy.

My mom saddled me with a double name (Rosalie Ann) which was kind of
difficult because it was so long that people wanted to shorten it. I
do not like Rosy, Rosanne, or Rosalyn (although that isn't so bad), so
I shortened it to Lee when I was in hs and college, and after I was
married I dropped the second name.

If we have another girl she would be Annabeth Marie after her 3
grandmothers, Ann is my moms middle name, Beth is my MIL middle name and
Marie is my step-mothers middle name. She would be called Anna for
short. I must admit I do like Rosalie Ann.. though i don't know that I
would use both together. My step mom tends to call Bonnie by her full
name, Bonnie Rae. Xavier does not have an obvious nick name but if you
ask him what his name is he will tell you Baby Brother. I almost gave
him 2 middle names but I decided against it while filling out his birth
cert. I use the 2nd middle name all the time though when he is acting up.

my younger brother added a second middle name for himself when
he started school (age 5). he suddenly became Daniel James
Alexander. he says it sounded better that way.
lee lost the first name as soon as i could

Ah - pre-emptive nicknaming! Yes, I did that. When DH told me he
wanted to use the name James for a son, the first thing I said was
"Well, he'll have to be a Jamie because I don't like Jimmy." For some
reason it never occurred to me that he could just be James. Now, he's
well and truly Jamie. ;-)

All the best,

Sarah
