Default Zoloft and nursing

I've been away from MKB from quite some time now since my kids are older. I
have a question for my friend whose OB prescribed zoloft for ppd. She won't
take it for several reasons. Her pediatrician told her it wasn't safe for
nursing and her husband seems to have some bias against antidepressants. I'd
like to get her some info regarding taking zoloft and bf. I thought I
remembered that it was fairly safe to take. I can't find Hale's website and
long gave away my copy. She's very depressed because she had to have an
emergency hysterectomy after post-partum hemhorrhage. This was her first
pregnancy/and birth.

Any info would be great. Thanks!

How sad :-(.

There isn't info on Hales' website as he says look in the book! However
kellymom.com has a good set of info.

The pediatrician is wrong, the only slight risk is slower weight gain, but
it a risk that implies monitoring, not not taking drugs it sounds like she
needs.

Out of curiosity, what did Tom Cruise do or not do that has made you so
upset?

Something about Shields' PPD being imagined or something like that.

Oh, that Tom Cruise just makes my blood boil - and NOT in the good way!
I am on a lifetime boycott of him - I will never see another of his
movies ever, ever, EVER again, the *******.

I just finished Brooke Shield's book, and it was very good, and very
accurate for what I went through (including the denial, and going off
the meds without observation... We're two peas in a pod, I guess).

They gave me zoloft and it was fine. The OP's friend's husband needs
to decide which he would rather have - a happy mom with a happy baby,
or a miserable mom with a miserable baby. Or worse yet, a dead mom or
a dead baby, because it DOES happen. PPD is nothing to screw around
with. I'd recommend that anyone who thinks she might have it do some
serious research, and quick, and get some serious help. I wish I had
gotten help sooner. I had to have a nervous breakdown in the doctor's
office, which was pretty embarassing.

That said, there is a difference IMHO between PPD and situational
depression. PPD or other "clinical" depressions involve an imbalance
in neurotransmitters that cause a depressed mood. SSRIs attempt to
correct this imbalance which is the cause of the depression.
Situational depression is a depressed mood resulting from something bad
happening...death of a spouse, unplanned hysterectomy, etc. The
depressed mood then causes the serotonin levels to fall (not the other
way around). SSRIs can still help since they alter the serotonin
levels, but in these cases cognitive therapy and simple time are often
just as effective for relieving situational depression. (Situational
depression can also lead to clinicial depression if the brain get
"used" to the lower serotonin levels, in which case SSRIs might be
needed in addition to therapy).

That is a great explanation of the difference between situational depression
and clinical depression - thank you!

Hope she is able to get some reliefe so that she can enjoy her new
baby.
Amy

Thank you again Amy!

I'm right there with you on the boycott of Tom Cruise. What a slap in the
face to women everywhere (and there families) who have experienced PPD.
