CTTS: Books v TV, and the Doctor
The 8yo has worked out that lots of films that Mummy watches with them
were originally books - eg Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc. Currently the new "Doctor Who" [1] has started showing. We were watching it together, and the Doctor was being deliberately obtruse about his home planet. The 8yo turned to me and said "Do you know where he comes from, Mummy? Is it in the book?" Now I have to explain to her that sometimes the TV series came first... [1] Doctor Who is a staple of my generation's childhood, a TV series about a mysterious humanoid alien who roams time and space rescueing alien species, with the help of a trusty companion. It got dropped from the TV schedules in the '80s (it started in the '60s) and just like Star Trek got a "New Generation" this is the equivalent for British sci-fi. -- Penny Gaines UK mum to three |
