Default Jeckle & Hyde~orapred????

My 15 month old DS has been on orapred (lung infection) since Monday.
Also since Monday, nothing makes him happy.
If he drops a toy, he wails. If I leave the room, He wails.
If I hand him the wrong thing on the table when he asked for something,
he wails.
Has anyone else had experience with this drug and did it make your child
irritable.
I am concerned because if it is not the drug, something else is making him
unhappy, and he
is normally a happy kid.

Yes, he may be teething, but no other tooth has produced this reaction.
His cough is almost gone after 2 days on the medication, so I don't think
the cough
is irritating him.

Thanks for any feedback

I don't have experience with the drug, but what you describe
sounds exactly like our DS when he is coming down with something.
It sometimes takes some time for him to get back to normal, he
is like that as long as he runs a fever.

It could be that he just doesn't feel well at all and crying is how he is
letting it show.

Yes, my daughter has had what I'd call emotional reactions to orapred.
I think it's kind of expected, and I'm sorry your Dr. didn't warn
you. He probably has a short course, under a week, right? It's
usually accepted that the response is sometimes obnoxious, but since
it's a short time, and it's a generally helpful medication, that you
deal with it, as I'm sure you are ; )

I've been on Prednisone myself, and I hated the way it made me feel.
I found myself clutching my fists for no reason and I was very easily
frustrated. But, I was able to stay out of the hospital, so I guessed
it was worth it.

He should be better soon, I'd guess, but you should call and describe
his behavior to your Doc on the phone at least, just in case there's
something else they're watching him for/following in his case.

Good Luck!

Tina.

Thanks Tina!
Yes, I don't mind dealing with grumpy at all, I was just worried
about the source. You know, if that drug did not make him grumpy, what did?
He took his last yesterday and yes, it was a short course. (3 days)
If it has that effect, combined with albuteral (which I know makes me
nervous)
I would be grumpy too!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, poor Genevieve's on prednisolone and albuteral
too, and is definitely more wired and grumpy than usual :-(
Hopefully she'll get over this very quickly so we can back
off.

Best wishes,
Ericka

is orapred a steroidal prescription?
My son turns absolutely EVIL on certain steroids and so did my
grandmother. My daughter gets agitated from some antibiotics.
Plenty of docs will tell you it's just the illness but I disagree.
IMO, drugs can cause temporary personailty and emotional issues.

My son has definitely been Jeckle & Hyde. He is 2 1/2 and is a wonderful kid that all of his teachers at school love. He is always very cheerful and hugs everyone. He has been battling the flu (he did have a flu shot and also had a fever of 104.5 2 nights ago). He went on Orapred yesterday (the first dose at the doc's office last night) and has been an absolute lunatic ever since. He is also on Albuterol, Zyrtec, Singulair and Pulmocor (he's also climbimng on me right now). I did not know what was wrong with him when he woke up this morning and has been horrible all day. Screaming and crying at the drop of a hat and then seeming to slip into semi conciousness as though he is in a trance. I have looked at some other articles about Orapred this evening and I'm hoping that this is all it is. He is on a 5 day dose and at least today he end of the second day. Only 3 to go.

Well, for us it was definitely the orapred. 1 day after he finished it he
was himself again.
He was also on pulmocort (only after he finished the orapred) and albuteral.
I am concerned about your child's trance states. Please call your doctor, as
that sounds
alarming to me. My son never did that.
Let me know how he is...
