Flour Sifting
Spread newspaper on the floor, provide a bag of flour, a scoop and a sifter. Let the child scoop and sift (a turn handle is easier than a squeeze handle but both work) Manipulating small toys and objects Legos, building with blocks, doing jigsaw puzzles, playing with magnets Stringing and lacing Use shoelaces or lengths of yarn (with tape on the end or a plastic needle). String macaroni, cereal, buttons, spools, wooden beads. Let her make necklaces, bracelets, etc. Or get some lacing cards. Weaving on a homemade loom works too - you can make one out of a shoebox and let him try the in and out pattern with yarn. Egg Carton collections Let your child sort buttons or beads or beans or pebbles or shells or any small thing into the individual egg compartments Household tools Have your child pick up cereal pieces with tweezers, make a guitar out of a shoe box by stretching rubber bands, hang napkins or doll clothes or paper towels on a rope with clothespins, smash egg cartons with a mallet or small hammer, pound golf tees or nails into foam blocks Office and classroom tools Let your child cut with scissors, draw with crayons, pencils and markers, paint with brushes (you can use feathers, sticks, straws, eyedroppers, pine needles, etc, to paint too),. Let him use a hole puncher, squeeze glue to make a collage. Let her use stamps and stamp pads to make designs, lick stickers for a picture. Let them wrap boxes with brown or decorative paper. Playdough Have him knead, shape, pinch, squeeze, pound playdough (you can make your own from flour, water, salt and food coloring). Roll snakes, form balls, pound pancakes, cut out cookies. Use coins, keys, paper clips, hair curlers, etc to make imprints. Try blunt scissors, a rolling pin, a garlic press, an egg slicer, etc. Homemade cooked playdough recipe Mix two cups flour, 4 tsps cream of tartar, two cups water, 4 tblsps vegetable oil in a cooking pot. Stir over low heat until dough comes away from the side and makes a soft ball. Blend in a few drops of food coloring or peppermint extract if you wish. Let cool. Store in covered container. Homemade uncooked playdough 2 cups flour 1 cup water 1 cup salt food coloring (optional) Let children, measure and mix the ingredients together. If you want to use food coloring, squeeze a few drops into the water. You can add spices or extracts for a nice smell if you wish. You can also add a bit of glitter for sparkles -- Dorothy There is no sound, no cry in all the world that can be heard unless someone listens .. Outer Limits |
