Beyond the many great suggestions of classics, a few read-alouds that we really
enjoyed from more contemporary authors: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler The Superfudge Books (start with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and while you're at it, you can do Otherwise Known as Sheila The Great as well, then on to Superfudge, etc. My son loved series at that age) Holes Other (not necessarily boy-based) books that Henry really liked at that age (and are great fun for read-aloud as they are funny): -the Amber Brown series -Junie B Jones series (they may be a little beyond them but hey, I still buy each new book and read them myself because they are so darned funny) I'm not sure I'd be so concerned about gender specifics -- some classics like Anne of Green Gables have great appeal to all, IMO. -Dawn Mom to Henry, 12 |

It is still one of my all time favorite stories. I also love short stories. Recently, I ordered some little plushie animals for one of my cousins who is afraid of the dark- these toys actually come with stories that go along with the theme of the plushie. So I printed the story "Yikes, I'm afraid of the Dark!" and sent the story along with the plushie. Here is where I found them: bedbuggs.com -- if you are interested in following the story. There are also some fun games on the site~ |
