Default How soon can an infant can take long flights?

There's a strong possibility that my baby (edd sept) will have to fly
with me to Asia when I'm still on Maternity leave. I read on this ng
before that some of the ladies took their babies at 2months. So is two
months the earliest the baby can fly long distance? Are there any
other contingencies like approval from the ped, some shots, airline
policies etc?? Or is it ok to take the baby at 1.5 months? I can take
one day break between connecting flights it helps.

Thanks.

My cousin and his wife took both their sons at 6 weeks on flights from Los
Angeles to London. No problems.

Hi

I would think tat the safest way to find out, is to check with your
pediatrician. I know that my sister took her son on a flight (2 hour
one, so it wasn't all that long) when he was 1 month old.

I am thinking that the problem with flying is the pressure. So, if a
child can tae a 2 hour flight, it should take a longer trip. A good tip
is to keep giving it something to drink, cause that releases the
pressure from the ears.

Then again, these are all just my take on things. I am sure the doctor
would have a definate answer, especially that he/she knows your child.

Good luck

I flew with my daughter from NC where she was born, home to CA when she was
just 1.5 weeks old. I did get a doctors note stating that there was no
medical reason why she couldn't fly, just in case the airlines asked for it.
They didn't, but I felt better knowing that I had it, and that there really
was no medical reason why she couldn't fly.

The pressure is one of the main issue, so as long as you feed your baby on
take-offs and landings, you should be okay.

the change in pressure is an issue, not the pressure itself, so an 2 hour
flight and a 12 hour flight both have 2 pressure changes....help the baby
through pressure changes and all will be ok.
The big issue in my mind is sickness...If someone on a 12 hour flight has a
cold or the flu, your child may get it.
This will be a big problem if health care is an issue where you are going.
My Pedi would not allow us to medicate
our son at all until he was 4 month old. Are you comfortable in a foreign
country with an infant that starts coughing
and having fever spikes of 104 degrees and more? Breathing canned air for a
long time can certainly lead to this.

Some pediatricians recommend waiting at least until after the baby has had the
two-month vaccinations before traveling or doing anything that will expose the
baby to large numbers of people at close quarters (as in an airplane). But
certainly you *can* take a younger baby on a plane. You're just taking a
relatively high risk that the baby will get sick, so be prepared for that
eventuality.

Check with your obstetrician, also, about flight timing and clot
prevention. You could be at increased risk for deep venous thrombosis
and pulmonary embolism for several weeks after the birth.

I have heard of babies who were younger flying, but I personally won't
take a baby that young onto a plane.
