salicylic acid in facial soap

another question for ya's.......... since i went off bcp when my husband and
i started ttc-ing, my complexion started to get pimply. so i've been using a
medicated facial soap with 2% salicylic acid, which really helps. i've been
surfing a little and it seems like its ok (although obviously never tested
on pg women) to use during pregnancy. anyone have ideas on this? other ideas
for a 34-year old with 15-year old acne (and it would be like this if i
wasn't pregnant!) ???? i stopped using my benzoyl peroxide cream, as it
seems to me it has a higher possibility of absorbing into the skin since it
is rubbed in and not rinsed off (like the soap). Input would be appreciated!
(i'm seeing my doc in a few weeks, but looking for info b4 then). I am
currently 7wks.

I have read that one shouldnt use salicylic acid products during pregnancy,
kinda blows my whole skin care regime to hell. Though I have used it on
occassion. It seems you can use the benzoyl peroxide, but maybe not the
salicylic acid.

Studies with topical salicylic acid have not been done in humans. However,
studies in animals have shown that salicylic acid causes birth defects when
given orally in doses about 6 times the highest dose recommended for topical
use in humans.

Benzoyl peroxide - Skin care often includes preventing and treating acne.
Benzoyl peroxide has antibacterial properties that help treat acne and may
reduce swelling caused by acne. However, it can also dry the skin. If used
as directed it can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Salicylic Acid - If used in a gel, lotion, ointment, pad, soap, or other
topical solution, Salicylic Acid can help peel and dry the skin for the
treatment of acne and other skin conditions. As with most topical
medications, very small amounts of the product are absorbed. Birth defects
or problems during breastfeeding are not likely to occur.

My doctor didn't prohibit it strictly, but
I stopped using it myself. I figured I'd
cut out whatever I could that might be
harmful to the baby...

me. He told me my salicylic acid face wipes were aspirin.

I don't have any of the sources anymore, but I did a lot of research on
this when I was first pregnant (39 weeks now). Most of what I read said
that a salicylic acide face wash was fine because it rinses away
immediately, but not to use any sort of topical gel or cream that would
remain on the skin. I switched to a good non-medicated facial cleanser
(Purpose) and then used a salicylic acid cleanser (Neutrogena scrub) a
couple of times a week.

I've heard all sorts of conflicting things about various
products, and to be honest, I don't think anyone *really* knows
for sure. While my skin is fine normally, I break out significantly
while pregnant, and I never have found anything that really helped
me :-( I just wait it out and it's nice when it settles down again
after the baby's born and breastfeeding settles down.

I have the same problem, and I hate it. At the moment, I have a huge
pimple on my cheek. My DH was saying that it was so big, he could see
my heartbeat throbbing in it. Thanks, honey!

I personally don't do anything. I wash with Dove and plain water.
They will eventually go away. I am just thankful that it is hormones,
and when I get unpregnant, it will go away.

Salicylic acid aka BHA is typically used in skincare to keep pores clear, thus
preventing breakouts. Salicylic acid is a derivitive of aspirin (acetylsalicylic
acid), and has a large molecular size, which means it can't penetrate the skin
very well, so it shouldn't present a problem during ttcing, pregnancy or
breastfeeding.

Since you're just using a medicated soap, most of the BHA is getting washed off.
Even a topical BHA shouldn't be a problem. FWIW, I've been using the L'Oreal
Pure Zone cloths for a few weeks and really like them -- I have a t-zone with
pores that clog like crazy no matter what I do and these cloths keep my skin
perfectly clear.

BTW, AHAs (various acids) have a smaller molecular size and can penetrate the
skin more easily. Dr. Hale did respond to a question about glycolic acid and
said that it was fine to use while nursing, but I have no idea about during
pregnancy.

Salicylic acid is a derivitive of aspirin, so your doctor was almost right.
