For my doctor and at my hospital, the rule is 5-1-1 - You go to the hospital when the contractions are 5 minutes apart, at least 1 minute in duration, and that's been consistent for 1 hour. Just a note: my contractions never got regular or consistent. They were 8 minutes then 2 minutes then 5 minutes then 10 minutes. I laboured for 7 hours. The way I knew it was real labour and not braxton hicks is because they hurt like hell. So if they're really painful and you want to labour at the hospital I don't suggest waiting until they're 5 minutes apart, since that may never happen. -- Rebecca Jo Mama to Alexander 6/6/05 |

The doctor and the childbirth class I took never mentioned this possibility. I guess they figure that you'll call or come in if you're in enough pain, and the 5-1-1 thing is a guideline they can give you without saying, "Oh, by the way, it's going to hurt like hell..." I'm still trying to figure out a way I can get DH to do this for me... Amy |

The way I knew it was real labour and not braxton hicks is because they hurt like hell. At my hospital they counted how many occurred over 10 mins to get an average. I suppose in early labour you could double that, so ctx-8 min-ctx-2 min-ctx-5 min-ctx-10 min is actually 4 ctx in the first 20 mins = 5 mins apart. -- Chookie -- Sydney, Australia (Replace "foulspambegone" with "optushome" to reply) "In Melbourne there is plenty of vigour and eagerness, but there is nothing worth being eager or vigorous about."
