Rice cereal also is not just pure rice. There are a couple of other
things in it, the Heinz? one had rosemary extract. I know of a couple
of babies who have reacted to rice cereal and it is notorious for
causing constipation. I ended up using it for thickening up some of my
own vegie and fruit purees.

I can't understand why so many people feel they have to start on rice cereal
too, especially if as you say it's constipating. DD has never had commercial
baby cereal, but when I did give her rice it was wholegrain brown rice that
I ground or mashed. Sure, rice is easily digested, but I've heard
wholegrains aren't recommended before seven months, and it seems crazy to
take something like that and strip it down just to make it easier for a
younger baby to digest (there's a woman on another board whose paediatrician
told her to start her baby on rice cereal at 8 weeks, now it's 3 months old
and he says it should be having three feeds of solids a day, and on veges by
6 months - very disturbing).
There are so many great grains at the healthfood store that hardly anyone
considers giving to their baby. DD has had quinoa, buckwheat, millet and
amaranth. Millet and amaranth together make an especially smooth, great
tasting porridge.

"Ditch the rice cereal and mashed peas, and make way for enchiladas, curry
and even - gasp! - hot peppers. It's time to discard everything you think
you know about feeding babies. It turns out most advice parents get about
weaning infants onto solid foods - even from pediatricians - is more myth
than science."

Correction - that should read *especially* from paediatricians.

nak
I'm taking a much more improvised method with SHiny than I did with dd1.
MOst of what I give her is pretty solid. Cooked sweet potato. regular
banana, maybe scraped off the banana, but she'll sometimes just grab the
whole thing and chomp at it. I watch her like a hawk when she's eating in
general--if it's too much she opens her mouth and I flick whatever's in,
out.

Whole grain rice... she LOVES with olive oil.

What we had the other night for us (mashed sweet potato with bananas and
lite coconut milk and cinnamon) was awfully close to what she ate (chunkier
sweet potato and banana with full fat coconut milk.)

I'm starting her on meats next. She's 7 months old in a day or two.
